Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a splice in a conveyor belt capable of conveying metal can lids, the conveyor belt having two ends, the apparatus comprising:a lower guide plate holding one end of the conveyor belt in a first predetermined position, and holding the other end of the conveyor belt in a second predetermined position, the lower guide plate having a heating strip therein, the ends of the conveyor belt being positioned over the heating strip; and an upper guide plate engaging the lower guide plate to hold the ends of the conveyor belt in the predetermined positions, the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate including a plurality of areas of insulative material adjacent the heating strip, the areas of insulative material reducing the transfer of heat from the heating strip to portions of the conveyor belt adjacent the conveyor belt ends, wherein the conveyor belt has a plurality of apertures therein and both the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate have a plurality of conveyor belt aperture engaging projections thereon, both the upper guide plate projections and the lower guide plate projections engaging a plurality of conveyor belt apertures whereby each engaged conveyor belt aperture is engaged by one lower guide plate projection and one upper guide plate projection.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the insulative material is also positioned about the conveyor belt aperture engaging projections.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the lower guide plate has an edge guide along each side thereof.
- 4. An apparatus for forming a splice in a conveyor belt capable of conveying metal can lids, the conveyor belt having two ends, the apparatus comprising:a lower guide plate holding one end of the conveyor belt in a first predetermined position, and holding the other end of the conveyor belt in a second predetermined position, the lower guide plate having a heating strip therein, the ends of the conveyor belt being positioned over the heating strip; and an upper guide plate engaging the lower guide plate to hold the ends of the conveyor belt in the predetermined positions, the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate including a plurality of areas of insulative material adjacent the heating strip, the areas of insulative material reducing the transfer of heat from the heating strip to portions of the conveyor belt adjacent the conveyor belt ends, the conveyor belt having a plurality of apertures therein and at least one of the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate has plurality of conveyor belt aperture engaging projections thereon, wherein at least one conveyor belt aperture engaging projection has an aperture therein and at least one conveyor belt aperture engaging projection has a corresponding pin extending therefrom.
- 5. An apparatus for forming a splice in a conveyor belt capable of conveying metal can lids, the conveyor belt having a plurality of apertures therein and having two ends, the ends of the conveyor belt having a staggered S-shape, the apparatus comprising:a lower guide plate holding one end of the conveyor belt in a first predetermined position, and holding the other end of the conveyor belt in a second predetermined position, the lower guide plate having a heating strip therein, the ends of the conveyor belt being positioned over the heating strip; and an upper guide plate engaging the lower guide plate to hold the ends of the conveyor belt in the predetermined positions, the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate each having a plurality of conveyor belt aperture engaging projections thereon and each including a plurality of areas of insulative material adjacent the heating strip and about the conveyor belt aperture engaging projections, the areas of insulative material reducing the transfer of heat from the heating strip to portions of the conveyor belt adjacent the conveyor belt ends, wherein at least one conveyor belt aperture engaging projection has an aperture therein and at least one conveyor belt engaging projection has a corresponding pin extending therefrom.
- 6. An apparatus for forming a splice in a conveyor belt capable of conveying metal can lids, the conveyor belt having two ends, the apparatus comprising:a lower plate, the lower plate having a heating strip therein, the ends of the conveyor belt being positioned over the heating strip; and an upper plate engaging the lower plate, the lower plate and the upper plate including a plurality of areas of insulative material adjacent the heating strip, the areas of insulative material reducing the transfer of heat from the heating strip to portions of the conveyor belt adjacent the conveyor belt ends the upper and lower plates each having a plurality of pairs of laterally adjacent projections, one of the pairs of laterally adjacent projections consisting of one projection of said one of the pairs of laterally adjacent projections being positioned on one side of the heating strip and the other projection of said one of the pairs of laterally adjacent projections being positioned on the other side of the heating strip.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the ends of the conveyor belt have a curvilinear shape and the heating strip has a corresponding curvilinear shape.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the curvilinear shape is a staggered S-shape.
- 9. In combination:a conveyor belt capable of conveying metal can lids, the conveyor belt comprising a length of conveyor belt material having a first end and a second end, the conveyor belt material including a plurality of pairs of laterally adjacent conveyor belt drive holes, the first and second ends being cut in a staggered “S” shape whereby one of the pairs of laterally adjacent conveyor belt drive holes consists of one hole of said one of the pairs of laterally adjacent conveyor belt drive holes being in the conveyor belt material first end and the other hole of said one of the pairs of laterally adjacent conveyor belt drive holes being in the conveyor belt material second end; and a splice apparatus comprising: a lower guide plate holding the first end of the conveyor belt material in a first predetermined position, and holding the second end of the conveyor belt material in a second predetermined position, the lower guide plate having a heating strip therein, the first and second ends of the conveyor belt material being positioned over the heating strip; and an upper guide plate engaging the lower guide plate to hold the first and second ends of the conveyor belt material in the predetermined positions, the lower guide plate and the upper guide plate including a plurality of areas of insulative material adjacent the heating strip, the areas of insulative material reducing the transfer of heat from the heating strip to portions of the conveyor belt material adjacent the conveyor belt material first and second ends.
- 10. The combination according to claim 9, further comprising: the upper guide plate having a heating strip therein.
- 11. The combination according to claim 9, wherein the ends of the conveyor belt have a curvilinear shape and the heating strip has a corresponding curvilinear shape.
- 12. The combination according to claim 11, wherein the curvilinear shape is a staggered S-shape.
