Claims
- 1. In an apparatus for forming sleeves from overlapping webs comprising sealing means for sealing the webs together and severing means for severing the webs along lines extending at acute angles across the webs with adjacent lines extending at opposed angles to form a sleeve between each pair of lines having one end larger than the other end, the improvement comprising:
- means for twisting the webs first in one direction, when one seal is made, and then in the opposite direction when a next seal is made, whereby all of the sleeves are oriented in a same direction when produced.
- 2. The apparatus defined in claim 1 characterized further to include:
- suction cups engaging and expanding the sleeves when the sleeves are being formed.
- 3. The apparatus defined in claim 1 characterized further to include:
- a hot seal and cut bar arranged to simultaneously seal and sever the webs.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 characterized further to include:
- a feed blade positioned between the webs for twisting the webs.
- 5. The apparatus defined in claim 4 characterized further to include a rotator assembly; and
- means for connecting the feed blade to the rotator assembly.
- 6. The apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein the rotator assembly includes a set of nip rolls engaging each web.
- 7. The apparatus defined in claim 6 wherein the rotator assembly further includes a ring in which the nip rolls are mounted.
- 8. The apparatus defined in claim 5 wherein the means connecting the feed blade to the rotator assembly includes:
- a cylinder secured in a rotator assembly aligned with the webs entering the rotator assembly; and
- a plunger rod projecting from the cylinder, with the feed blade secured thereto.
- 9. The apparatus defined in claim 8 wherein the feed blade is pivotally connected to the end of the plunger rod opposite the cylinder.
- 10. The apparatus defined in claim 9 characterized further to include:
- a control cylinder means connected to the plunger rod and the feed blade to control the angle of the feed blade with respect to the plunger rod.
- 11. The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein the means for twisting the webs comprises a pair of grippers arranged to engage the free ends of the webs, and
- means for rotating the grippers.
- 12. The apparatus defined in claim 11 characterized further to include:
- a feed blade positioned between the webs for moving the webs to the grippers.
- 13. An apparatus for forming sleeves from overlapping webs of material having the free ends of the webs sealed together at a first acute angle across the webs, comprising:
- means for extending the webs from the source of supply;
- means for twisting the webs in one direction ninety degrees;
- means for sealing and severing the webs along a line extending at a second acute angle across the webs a distance from the free ends of the webs, with said second acute angle being opposed to said first acute angle to form a first sleeve between said seals having one end larger than the other end and leaving the free ends of the webs sealed along said second acute angle;
- means for untwisting the webs;
- means for again extending the webs from the source of supply;
- means for twisting the webs ninety degrees in the opposite direction; and
- means for sealing and severing the webs along a line extending at said second acute angle across the webs a distance from the free ends of the webs, thereby forming a second sleeve having one end larger than the other end and oriented in the same direction as the first sleeve.
