- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the device provides bending of said instrument through an angle of at least about 180 degrees.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device constrains motion of an end of the flexible instrument about a predetermined path.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device constrains translational motion of an end of the instrument while permitting rotation of the end of the instrument.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the device is rotatable through an angle of at least about 45 degrees about an axis fixed with respect to the distal end of the endoscope.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein at least a portion of the device is rotatable through an angle of at least about 90 degrees about an axis fixed with respect to the distal end of the endoscope.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device is shaped to provide visibility distal to said endoscope.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device is a mechanism comprising at least one pivoting member.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said mechanism comprises a pivot arm rotatable about a pivot axis.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device comprises a telescoping portion.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device comprises at least two links pivotably joined together.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said apparatus comprises a blade for cutting tissue.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device comprises at least one flexible strand.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a guide for associating a first instrument with a second instrument.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be releasably joined to the distal end of the endoscope.
- 19. The appartus of claim 1 wherein the device is provided in sterile packaging.
- 20. An apparatus for use with an endoscope, said apparatus comprising:
a mechanism for guiding medical instruments, the mechanism adapted to be releasably attached to the distal end of an endoscope.
- 21. An apparatus for use with an endoscope, the apparatus comprising:
a pivot arm adapted for attachment to a distal end of an endoscope, wherein the pivot arm is rotatable about a pivot axis.
- 22. An apparatus for use with an endoscope having an instrument channel, the apparatus comprising:
a base for attachment to a distal end of an endoscope; and a mechanism disposed on the base, the mechanism capable of guiding an instrument extending from an instrument channel to a tissue site spaced from the end of the endoscope.
- 23. An end cap for use with an endoscope, the end cap comprising:
a base attachable to an endoscope; and a mechanism disposed on the base.
- 24. The end cap of claim 23 wherein the mechanism comprises a pivot arm rotatable with respect to the base.
- 25. An assembly for use in medical procedures, the assembly comprising: an endoscope having an instrument channel;
a first instrument associated with the instrument channel; and a mechanism associated with an end of the endoscope, the mechanism for guiding motion of the first instrument.
- 26. The assembly of claim 25 wherein the mechanism restricts twisting of the instrument.
- 27. The assembly of claim 26 wherein the mechanism provides bending of the instrument.
- 28. The assembly of claim 27 wherein the mechanism provides bending of the flexible instrument through an angle of at least about 90 degrees.
- 29. The assembly of claim 25 wherein the mechanism constrains motion of an end of the instrument while permitting rotation of the end of the instrument.
- 30. The assembly of claim 25 wherein the mechanism comprises at least one pivoting member.
- 31. The assembly of claim 25 wherein the mechanism comprises a telescoping portion.
- 32. The assembly apparatus of claim 25 wherein the mechanism comprises a blade for cutting tissue.
- 33. An assembly for use in medical procedures, the assembly comprising:
an endoscope having an internally placed instrument channel; a first instrument extending from a distal end of the instrument channel; and a device associated with the endoscope; the device for guiding the position of the first instrument as the first instrument is extended from the instrument channel.
- 34. The assembly of claim 33 wherein the first instrument comprises an electrode for providing tissue ablation.
- 35. The assembly of claim 33 wherein the first instrument comprises a hollow member in communication with a source of vacuum.
- 36. The assembly of claim 33 wherein the first instrument comprises a hollow member in communication with a source of argon plasma.
- 37. The assembly of claim 33 wherein the first instrument comprises a blade for cutting tissue.
- 38. The assembly of claim 33, further comprising a second instrument, wherein the device is adapted to engage the first instrument to manuever the first instrument to cooperate with the second instrument.
- 39. The assembly of claim 33 further comprising means for suturing tissue.
