Claims
- 1. A light guide unit comprising:
- a main unit body consisting of a plurality of laminated light guides and having an outgoing surface on one side;
- a reflecting plate disposed on the other side of said main unit body; and
- means disposed between said main unit body and said reflecting plate for changing the polarization direction of light; wherein said plurality of light guides are laminated aslant the width direction of said main unit body.
- 2. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein said reflecting-plate side end of said plurality of light guides is in a shape equally cut to a plane.
- 3. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein said outgoing surface is in a stepwise shape comprising the end of said plurality of light guides and said stepwise shape includes a plane parallel to the outgoing angle related to a definite polarized component outgoing form said outgoing surface.
- 4. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein the slant angle of the end of the said reflecting plate side of said plurality of light guides is .alpha. [rad], where
- .alpha.: (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/2 m;
- .THETA..sub. : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2.sup.2 /(n.sub.1.sup.2 +n.sub.2.sup.2).sup.1/2);
- n.sub.1 : refractive index of a substance inserted between the light guides;
- n.sub.2 : refractive index of a light guide;
- m: natural number less than (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/(.THETA..sub.2 -.THETA..sub.1);
- .THETA..sub.2 : critical angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2 /n.sub.1)).
- 5. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein the slant angle of the end of the said reflecting plate side of said plurality of light guides is a is .alpha..+-..pi./120 m [rad], where
- .alpha.: (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/2 m;
- .THETA..sub.1 : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2.sup.2 /(n.sub.1.sup.2 +n.sub.2.sup.2).sup.1/2);
- n.sub.1 : refractive index of a substance inserted between the light guides;
- n.sub.2 : refractive index of a light guide;
- m: natural number less than (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/(.THETA..sub.2 -.THETA..sub.1);
- .THETA.2: critical angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2 /n.sub.1)).
- 6. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein said means for changing the polarization direction of light is a quarter wave plate.
- 7. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, wherein said light guides are acryl sheets.
- 8. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, further comprising means for correcting the direction of reflection from said reflecting plate.
- 9. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 1, further comprising means for correcting the outgoing direction of light on said outgoing surface.
- 10. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 9, wherein said means for correcting the outgoing direction of light on said outgoing surface is a prism sheet.
- 11. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 10, wherein said prism sheet on said outgoing surface includes the two sides of a rectangular triangle with the top angle C [rad], where
- C: arctan ((n.sub.3 cos (arcsin (sin A /n.sub.3))-1)/sin A);
- A: arcsin (n.sub.1 sin .THETA..sub.1)+.alpha.;
- .THETA..sub.1 : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 ;
- .alpha.: slant angle of said plurality of light guides;
- n3: refractive index of said prism sheet.
- 12. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 10, wherein said prism sheet on said outgoing surface includes the two sides of an isosceles triangle with the top angle 2C [rad], where
- C: arctan ((n.sub.3 cos (arcsin (sin A/n.sub.3))-1)/sin A);
- A: arcsin (n.sub.1 sin .THETA..sub.1)+.alpha.;
- .THETA.1: Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 ;
- .alpha.: slant angle of said plurality of light guides;
- n3: refractive index of said prism sheet.
- 13. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 10, wherein said prism sheet on said outgoing surface includes the two sides of a rectangular triangle with the top angle C.+-..pi./90 [rad], where
- C: arctan ((n.sub.3 cos (arcsin (sin A/n.sub.3))-1)/sin A);
- A: arcsin (n.sub.1 sin .THETA..sub.1)+.alpha.;
- .THETA..sub.1 : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 ;
- .alpha.: slant angle of said plurality of light guides;
- n.sub.3 : refractive index of said prism sheet.
- 14. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 10, wherein said prism sheet on said outgoing surface includes the two sides of an isosceles triangle with the top angle 2C.+-..pi./45 [rad], where
- C: arctan ((n.sub.3 cos (arcsin (sin A/n.sub.3))-1)/sin A);
- A: arcsin (n.sub.1 sin .THETA..sub.1)+.alpha.;
- .THETA..sub.1 : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 ;
- .alpha.: slant angle of said plurality of light guides;
- n.sub.3 : refractive index of said prism sheet.
- 15. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 9, wherein said means for correcting the outgoing direction of light on said outgoing surface is a groove machined on said outgoing surface.
- 16. A light guide unit comprising:
- a main unit body consisting of a plurality of laminated light guides and having an outgoing surface on one side;
- a reflecting plate disposed on the other side of said main unit body; and
- means disposed between said main unit body and said reflecting plate for changing the polarization direction of light; wherein said plurality of light guides are laminated aslant the width direction of said main unit body and a ray of light is arranged to be incident on the end toward said reflecting plate.
- 17. The light guide unit as set forth in claim 16, further comprising means for converging said ray of light incident on the end at said reflecting plate side in parallel.
- 18. A light guide unit including a main unit body comprising a main unit body consisting of a plurality of laminated light guides, having an outgoing surface on one side, and the reflecting surface of said plurality of light guides having the end adjacent to said outgoing surface in a shape equally cut to a plane, said plurality of light guides laminated at a slant angle of .alpha..+-..pi./120 m [rad] to the width direction of said main unit body, where
- .alpha.: (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/2 m;
- .THETA..sub.1 : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2.sup.2 /(n.sub.1.sup.2 +n.sub.2.sup.2).sup.1/2);
- n.sub.1 : refractive index of a substance inserted between the light guides;
- n.sub.2 : refractive index of a light guide;
- m: natural number less than (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/(.THETA..sub.2 -.THETA..sub.1);
- .THETA..sub.2 : critical angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2 /n.sub.1)).
- 19. A light guide unit including a main unit body comprising:
- a main unit body consisting of a plurality of laminated light guides and having an outgoing surface on one side; and
- a reflecting plate disposed on the other side of said main unit body;
- and said plurality of light guides laminated at a slant angle of .alpha..+-..pi./120 m [rad] to the width direction of said main unit body, where
- .alpha.: (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/2 m;
- .THETA..sub. : Brewster's angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2.sup.2 /(n.sub.1.sup.2 +n.sub.2.sup.2).sup.1/2);
- n.sub.1 : refractive index of a substance inserted between the light guides;
- n.sub.2 : refractive index of a light guide;
- m: natural number less than (.pi./2-.THETA..sub.1)/(.THETA..sub.2 -.THETA..sub.1);
- .THETA..sub.2 : critical angle at the incidence from a substance of refractive index n.sub.1 to a substance of n.sub.2 (=arcsin (n.sub.2 /n.sub.1)).
- 20. A light polarizing method comprising the steps of:
- allowing light comprising a first and second polarized components to enter the surface adjacent to a outgoing surface of a main unit body consisting of a plurality of slant, laminated light guides and having an outgoing surface on one side;
- allowing light comprising a first and second polarized components to be reflected from the surface adjacent to said outgoing surface;
- allowing light containing more of a first polarized component having a first outgoing direction than a second polarized component to transmit and a part of light containing more of a second component than a first component to be reflected said outgoing surface side end in each of said plurality of light guide;
- allowing each ray of light containing more of said second polarized component partly reflected than a first polarized component to outgo from the main unit body;
- changing the polarization direction of light for each ray of light containing more of said second polarized component outgoing from said main unit body than a first polarized component;
- reflecting each of said rays of light changed in polarization direction;
- further changing the polarization direction of said rays of light changed and reflected into such rays of light as to contain more of a first polarized component having a second outgoing direction than a second polarized component;
- allowing each of said rays of light more of a first polarized component having a second outgoing direction than a second polarized component to enter said main unit body; and
- allowing each of said rays of light more of a first polarized component having a second outgoing direction than a second polarized component to transmit through said outgoing surface side end in each of said plurality of light guide.
- 21. A liquid crystal display comprising:
- a light source;
- glass base plates for sandwiching liquid crystals;
- an upper polarizing plate;
- a main unit body consisting of a plurality of light guides laminated aslant the width direction thereof and having an outgoing surface on one side;
- a prism sheet disposed on the outgoing surface of said main unit body;
- a reflecting plate disposed on the other side of said main unit body; and
- means disposed between said main unit body and said reflecting plate for changing the polarization direction of light.
