Claims
- 1. Apparatus for installing connectors onto flat conductor cables having a plurality of spaced conductors comprising:
- (a) a supply of one piece connectors, each of said connectors being formed of an electrically conductive material and being of a one piece construction;
- (b) means for locating a predetermined one of the conductors of the flat conductor cable at an installation station;
- (c) means for removing a single connector from the supply and aligning the single connector with the predetermined conductor and
- (d) means for pressing the single connector into the flat conductor cable and into physical contact and electrical contact with the predetermined conductor, the means for pressing including a fixed anvil means and a ram means movable toward the fixed anvil means for moving a single connector through the flat conductor cable and predetermined conductor and into contact with the fixed anvil whereby the single connector is deformed into the flat conductor cable so that the connector is secured to the flat connector cable and predetermined conductor and electrical current can pass from the predetermined conductor to the connector.
- 2. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein means for locating the flat conductor cable is a guide means operably supported by the apparatus and engageable with the edge of the flat conductor cable.
- 3. The apparatus in claim 2 wherein the guide means is detachably supported by the apparatus.
- 4. The apparatus in claim 2 wherein the guide means is slideably locatable at more than one position relative to the installation station whereby the operator can select which conductor in the flat conductor cable is to be placed in the installation station.
- 5. The apparatus in claim 1 wherein the means for aligning the connector with the flat conductor cable also aligns the connector with the ram means.
- 6. The apparatus in claim 5 wherein the means for removing a conductor from the supply and aligning the conductor with the ram means is a transfer means which includes a connector receiving means for holding the connector, and further including means for moving the transfer means to locate the connector receiving means either adjacent the supply or adjacent the ram means.
- 7. The apparatus in claim 6 wherein the transfer means is biased in the position whereat the connector receiving means is adjacent the supply.
- 8. Apparatus for installing connectors onto flat conductor cables comprising:
- a supply of connectors;
- means for locating a predetermined portion of the flat conductor cable at an installation station;
- means for removing a connector from the supply and aligning the connector with the predetermined portion of the flat conductor cable;
- means for pressing the connector into the flat conductor able whereby electrical current can pass from the flat conductor cable to the conductor; and
- whereby the means for pressing is a movable ram means and fixed anvil means and means for aligning the connector with the flat conductor cable also aligns the connector with the ram means;
- the means for removing a conductor from the supply and aligning the conductor with the ram means is a transfer means which includes a connector receiving means for holding the connector, and further including means for moving the transfer means to locate the connector receiving means either adjacent the supply or adjacent the ram means; and
- the ram means includes means for loading and holding the connector thereon, and the transfer means includes means for releasing the connector from the connector receiving means as it is being loaded onto the ram means.
- 9. Apparatus for installing a rivet connector, the connector having a post, flange, and an opening therein, onto a flat conductor cable comprising:
- (a) a supply of connectors
- (b) means for locating a predetermined portion of the flat conductor cable at an installation station
- (c) means for pressing the connector into and through the flat conductor cable at the installation station, the pressing means including a ram means and anvil, the ram means further including a guide pin means which is engageable with the opening of the connector,
- (d) means for removing the connector from the supply and aligning the opening of the connector with the guide pin means and
- (e) means for moving the ram means and/or the anvil means relative to one another to press the connector into the portion of the flat conductor cable in the installation station.
- 10. The apparatus in claim 9 wherein the anvil means is fixed and the ram means is movable thereto.
- 11. The apparatus in claim 8 wherein the guide pin means retains the connector in the ram means until it is connected to the flat conductor cable.
- 12. The apparatus in claim 9 wherein the flange portion of the connector is adjacent the ram means.
- 13. The apparatus in claim 9 wherein the connector post has a tapered wall therein on its end opposite the flange.
- 14. The apparatus in claim 9 wherein the means for removing the connector from the supply and aligning the connector with the ram means is a transfer means which includes a recessed receiving pocket for the connector, and further including means for moving the transfer means to place the pocket adjacent the supply means and adjacent the ram means.
- 15. The apparatus in claim 14 wherein the transfer means includes jaw means which, when closed, enables the pocket to hold the connector on the transfer means and, when open, enables the connector to be removed from the pocket, and further including a means for opening the jaws when a connector, located in the pocket, also has the guide pin means engaged with the opening in the connector.
- 16. The apparatus in claim 14 wherein the guide means is retractable into the ram means and is biased to remain unretracted, and the transfer means includes a ramp means which forces the guide pin means to retract sufficiently to ride over the transfer means and connector as the transfer means moves the connector towards the ram means to be loaded thereon.
