Claims
- 1. An apparatus for machining a bent elongated workpiece at at least one predetermined location thereon despite variations in the actual bent shape of the elongated workpiece from an intended bent shape thereof, said apparatus comprising:
- a support;
- means for moving said support relative to said bent elongated workpiece;
- a head movably mounted to said support;
- a first spring means mounted to said support and said head for urging said head in a first direction away from said support and towards said bent elongated workpiece;
- a first follower mounted to said head and being urged into contact with said bent elongated workpiece by said first spring means;
- a second spring means mounted to said support and said head for urging said head in a second direction away from said support and toward said bent elongated workpiece, said second direction being angularly aligned to said first direction;
- a second follower mounted to said head and being urged into contact with said bent elongated workpiece by said second spring means; and
- machining means for performing a selected machining operation on said bent elongated workpiece, said machining means being mounted to said head and in fixed spaced relationship to said followers, said fixed spaced relationship between said machining means and said followers being such that said machining means is aligned with the preselected location on said bent elongated workpiece when the followers are urged into contact with said bent elongated workpiece.
- 2. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said head is movably mounted to said support member for movement through two angularly aligned planes.
- 3. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the elongated workpiece is of hollow tubular construction, and wherein the machining means is operative to perform a machining operation on a wall of said tubular workpiece.
- 4. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the machining means comprises means for cutting through said tubular member.
- 5. An apparatus as in claim 4 wherein said machining means comprises a plasma arc cutting means.
- 6. An apparatus as in claim 4 wherein said machining means comprises a laser cutter.
- 7. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said support comprises a robotic arm.
- 8. An apparatus as in claim 7 wherein said means for moving said support comprises control means for moving said support to a predetermined position relative to the intended shape of said bent elongated workpiece.
- 9. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said first and second spring means are disposed relative to one another such that said first and second directions are substantially orthogonal.
