Claims
- 1. An apparatus for extruding a polymeric foam from an extrudate comprising a polymeric resin and a blowing agent for providing an extrudate with a cellular structure upon extrusion, the apparatus comprising:an extruder having an inlet adapted to receive the extrudate; an extrusion die comprising a generally cylindrical body, an annular ridge extending from the cylindrical body and terminating in a peak, an annular slot located at the peak and defining an annular die opening forming an outlet for the extruder through which the extrudate is adapted to be pulled at a predetermined line speed, the extrusion die defining a longitudinal axis, and the annular die opening being concentrically oriented relative thereto and positioned therefrom at a first radial distance; a choke ring having an opening defined by an annular choke ring surface, the choke ring being positioned relative to the extruder such that the annular die opening is received within the choke ring opening, the choke ring opening being concentric about the longitudinal axis and positioned therefrom a second radial distance; and wherein the difference between the second radial distance and the first radial distance defines a gap between the choke ring and the die opening and the gap is less than 4.57 mm.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the gap is less than or equal to 0.8 mm.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the gap is about 0.762 mm.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the die is symmetrical relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the second radial distance is less than 30 millimeters.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the second radial distance is less than 28 millimeters.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the line speed is 50 to 300 mm/s.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the line speed is less than 250 mm/s.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the gap is set so that the extrudate leaving the annular die opening contacts the annular choke ring surface within a contact time that is less than 8 milliseconds.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the contact time is less than 5 milliseconds.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 9 to wherein the gap is less than or equal to 0.8 mm.
- 12. An apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the line speed is less than 250 mm/s.
- 13. An apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the second radial distance is less than 28 mm.
- 14. An apparatus for extruding a polymeric foam from an extrudate comprising a polymeric resin and a blowing agent for providing an extrudate with a cellular structure upon extrusion, the apparatus comprising:an extruder having an inlet adapted to receive the extrudate; an extrusion die comprising a cylindrical body and an annular ridge extending from the cylindrical body and terminating in a peak in which is formed an annular slot defining an annular die opening forming an outlet for the extruder through which the extrudate is adapted to be pulled at a predetermined line speed, the extrusion die defines a longitudinal axis, and the annular die opening is concentrically oriented relative thereto and positioned therefrom at a first radial distance; a choke ring having an opening defined by an annular choke ring surface, the choke ring is positioned relative to the extruder such that the annular die opening is received within the choke ring opening, the choke ring opening is concentric about the longitudinal axis and positioned therefrom a second radial distance; and wherein the difference between the second radial distance and the first radial distance defines a gap between the choke ring and the die opening, the gap being selected from a range of gap sizes, wherein the range of gap sizes is determined by a range of selected contact times defined as the quotient of the gap size (in units of millimeters) divided by the line speed (in units of millimeters per second), and the range of contact times is 0.001 to 0.020 seconds.
- 15. An apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the gap is less than 4.57 mm.
- 16. An apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the gap is less than or equal to 0.8 mm.
- 17. An apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the gap is about 0.762 mm.
- 18. An apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the die is symmetrical relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 19. An apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the contact time is less than 8 milliseconds.
- 20. An apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the contact time is less than 5 milliseconds.
- 21. An apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the second radial distance is less than 30 millimeter.
- 22. An apparatus according to claim 21 wherein the second radial distance is less than 28 millimeter.
- 23. An apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the line speed is 50 to 300 mm/s.
- 24. An apparatus according to claim 23 wherein the line speed is less than 250 mm/s.
- 25. An apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the contact time is less than 8 milliseconds.
- 26. An apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the contact time is less than 5 milliseconds.
- 27. An apparatus according to claim 26 wherein the gap is less than or equal to 0.8 mm.
- 28. An apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the line speed is less than 250 nm/s.
- 29. An apparatus according to claim 28 wherein the second radial distance is less than 28 mm.
- 30. An apparatus for extruding a polymeric foam from an extrudate comprising a polymeric resin and a blowing agent for providing the polymeric resin with a cellular structure upon extrusion, the apparatus comprising:an extruder having an inlet adapted to receive an extrudate; an extrusion die comprising an annular ridge terminating in a peak with an annular slot located at the peak, the annular slot forming an outlet for the extruder, the extrusion die defines a longitudinal axis, and the annular slot is concentrically oriented relative to and positioned therefrom at a first radial distance; a choke ring having a choke ring opening defined by an annular choke ring surface and the choke ring is positioned relative to the extruder such that the annular slot is received within the choke ring opening, the choke ring opening is concentric about the longitudinal axis and positioned therefrom a second radial distance; and wherein the difference between the second radial distance and the first radial distance defines a gap between the choke ring and the annular slot and the gap is set so that the extrudate leaving the annular slot contacts the annular choke ring surface within a contact time of 1.0 to 20.0 Milliseconds (ms).
- 31. An apparatus according to claim 30 wherein the gap is less than 4.57 millimeter (mm).
- 32. An apparatus according to claim 31 wherein the gap is less than or equal to 0.8 mm.
- 33. An apparatus according to claim 30 wherein the die is symmetrical relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 34. An apparatus according to claim 30 wherein the second radial distance is less than 30 mm.
- 35. An apparatus according to claim 34 wherein the second radial distance is less than 28 millimeters.
