- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7 further comprising means for controlling the knife, pushing means and swaging means to substantially simultaneously:
- cut a septum received in the septum-receiving bore at the slitting station with the knife;
- push a septum received in the septum-receiving bore at the unloading station with the pushing means into a housing received in a housing-receiving opening at the septum-loading station; and
- swage the end of a housing inwardly over a septum at the swaging station with the swaging means.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the means for controlling the knife, pushing means and swaging means comprises pneumatic means for moving the knife, pushing means and swaging means through their operative range of motion.
- 10. Apparatus for cutting a slit into an elastomeric septum which is to be positioned in a passageway of a housing in an injection or sampling site to seal the passageway of the housing and to sealingly receive a blunt cannula, the apparatus comprising:
- a block having a septum-receiving bore for receiving a septum before it is inserted into a housing and laterally constraining the septum against lateral deformation;
- a back support for supporting one end of a septum received in the septum-receiving bore of the block;
- a knife movable relative to the septum-receiving bore of the block to cut a slit into a septum received in the septum-receiving bore; and
- pushing means for removing a septum from the septum-receiving bore and inserting the septum into the passageway of a housing.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the septum-receiving bore has a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of a housing into which a septum will be inserted.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the back support has a passageway sized to allow a septum received in the septum-receiving bore to be pushed through the passageway of the back support by the pushing means, the block being movable relative to the back support between a slitting station, in which the passageway of the back support is not adjacent the septum-receiving bore of the block, and an unloading station, in which the septum-receiving bore of the block is aligned with the passageway of the back support to allow passage of a septum received in the septum-receiving bore through the passageway of the back support.
