Claims
- 1. An apparatus for making spherical pellets comprising a member including a central axial conical surface about a generally vertical axis having at the cone base a continuous generally circular outer peripheral edge, means continuously depositing a layer of material onto said central axial conical surface, means creating heat on said central axial conical surface sufficient to maintain said layer of material in a molten condition, means forming at least a part of said central axial conical surface imparting motion to said layer of material along and away from said vertical axis, whereby said outer peripheral edge is operable to discharge molten material generally radially in the form of spherical pellets. and fluid cooling means adjacent to and below said peripheral edge receiving said radially discharged pellets discharged from said edge while still at least partially molten at an angle such that the molten pellets enters the fluid cooling means retaining their spherical shape and solidifying the same by cooling in said fluid cooling means.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein a rotatable member provides the radial component of motion.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is a cylindrical hollow graphite tube.
- 4. An apparatus a claimed in claim 2 wherein the heating means is at least one set of vertically adjustable carbon electrodes opposite the said generally conical surface.
- 5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the heating means is a gas fired burner.
- 6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is a solid consumable member of material to be pelletized.
- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is a hollow consumable member of material to be pelletized.
- 8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the rotatable member is formed of compressed particles within an outer restraining tube.
- 9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for creating heat is a pair of opposing heat sources.
- 10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 9 wherein the heat sources are opposing burners.
- 11. An apparatus as claimed in claim 9 wherein the heat sources are opposing electrodes.
- 12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11 wherein one of the electrodes is consumable.
- 13. An apparatus for making spherical pellets comprising a member including a central axial conical surface about a generally vertical axis having at the cone base a continuous generally circular outer peripheral edge, means continuously depositing a layer of material onto said central axial conical surface, means creating heat on said central axial conical surface sufficient to maintain said layer of material in a molten condition, means forming at least a part of said central axial conical surface imparting motion to said layer of material along and away from said vertical axis, whereby said outer peripheral edge is operable to discharge molten material generally radially in the form of spherical pellets, and fluid cooling means adjacent to and below said peripheral edge receiving said radially discharged pellets discharged from said edge while still at least partially molten horizontally across said fluid coolant in a rolling action effecting rapid submergence.
