Claims
- 1. An apparatus in making a lens having surfaces free of bubbles and entrapped air from a plastic preform, comprising:
- a pair of molds,
- each of said molds having a predetermined shaped lens cavity, and each of said molds being positioned in said apparatus;
- means for providing a monolithic preform of thermoplastic lens material which is able to make point or line contact on opposite surfaces thereof with said lens cavities of said pair of molds;
- means for applying pressure to said molds to urge the molds towards each other and against said preform to a predetermined pressure value and for maintaining said predetermined pressure value;
- means for heating said pair of molds to heat said preform while said pressure applying means maintains said predetermined pressure value on said monolithic preform; and
- terminating means for stopping said heating by said heating means, while said pressure applying means maintains substantially said predetermined pressure value, once said monolithic preform is changed by compression molding into a lens defined by said pair of molds, whereby the formed compression molded lens is free of surface irregularities and warpage due to bubbles and air being entrapped between said molds and said monolithic preform, due to said monolithic preform making point or line contact with said pair of molds so as to preclude air entrapped in the compression molded lens.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, including means for cooling said pair of molds while said pressure applying means maintains substantially said predetermined pressure value.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for heating said pair of molds is selected from one of the group consisting of conductive heating means, radiation heating means, dielectric heating means, fluid heating, means, and infrared heating means.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said means for cooling said pair of molds comprises means for flowing a cooling liquid through said pair of molds or means for blowing air across said pair of molds.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein one of said pair of molds is provided with a concave lens cavity and the other of said pair of molds is provided with a convex lens cavity.
- 6. An apparatus for making a lens from thermoplastic material in the form of monolithic preform mass, comprising:
- a. a press;
- b. a pair of lens molds positioned in said press;
- c. means for providing a monolithic preform mass which is able to make point or line contact with each of said lens molds;
- said press including means for pressing said pair of lens molds toward each other and against said preform mass at a predetermined pressure and for maintaining said predetermined pressure;
- d. means for heating said pair of lens molds to heat said preform mass while said pressing means maintains said predetermined pressure on said preform mass; and
- e. terminating means for terminating the heating up of said pair of lens molds by said heating means after said preform mass is changed into a lens, and wherein said pressing means maintains said predetermined pressure until a formed lens is removed from said pair of lens molds, and wherein air bubbles are prevented from being entrapped in said lens by virtue of said preform mass making point or line contact with each of said lens molds.
- 7. An apparatus for fabricating an ophthalmic quality lens, comprising a pair of molds; a press for compression molding in said pair of molds, wherein said pair of molds has substantially matingly configured surfaces therebetween for forming a lens; means for providing a monolithic perform mass which is able to make a point of line contact with said surfaces so as to preclude formation of air bubbles in a formed lens, said press including means for applying a predetermined pressure by said pair of molds on said preform mass and for maintaining said predetermined pressure; and means for heating continuously said preform mass to increasingly higher temperatures while said predetermined pressure is maintained until said preform mass is fully compression molded and changed into said formed lens by said substantially matingly configured surfaces of said pair of molds.
- 8. The apparatus in accordance with claim 7, including means for cooling said pair of molds while said maintaining means maintains said predetermined pressure upon said preform mass of material.
