Claims
- 1. An apparatus for impregnating at least one edge surface of a first and a second batt with extruded synthetic fibers, the apparatus comprising:
- a conveyor for conveying said batts with their side edges in adjacent opposing relationship and in a conveying path having a common direction,
- separator means having a first surface and a second surface spaced from said first surface, said separator means extending laterally across said conveying path and being spaced from said conveyor a sufficient distance for diverting said first batt during conveying so that said first batt is conveyed proximal said first surface while said second batt is conveyed proximal said second surface thereby to separate a side edge of said first batt from an opposing adjacent side edge of said second batt a sufficient distance to create a zone of exposure wherein at least one of said side edges is impregnated with said extruded synthetic fibers, and
- means located in said zone of exposure for impregnating at least one of said exposed edges with said fibers.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said exposure created by said separator means is such that the entire edge surface of said batt is exposed to said impregnating means.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2 which includes at least two zones of exposure, one zone being located on each side edge of a batt, and said impregnating means are located in each zone of exposure for impregnating each side of said batt.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said separator means includes means for separating at least two pair of opposing edges of at least three batts thereby to create a zone of exposure as to each opposing edge of each adjacent batt, and wherein said impregnating means are located in each zone of exposure and adjacent each exposed edge of the batt in each zone for coating each such exposed edge of the batt with said extruded synthetic fibers.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said batts each are defined by a top surface, a bottom surface and two said edge surfaces and said apparatus further includes means for impregnating the top surface of said batts.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said apparatus further includes means for impregnating the bottom surface of said batts.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 1 or 5 which further includes means for preventing the adhesion of opposing side surface of said batts located in said apparatus in the conveying path after said impregnating means.
