Claims
- 1. Apparatus for manufacturing a pair of elongate wooden chord members each including a longitudinal groove in one surface thereof, from elongate rectangular wooden stock material, comprising:
- (a) a splitter blade and a pair of router tips respectively mounted on opposite sides of the blade;
- (b) means for rotating said splitter blade and router tips;
- (c) means for supporting a length of said stock material during cutting engagement with said splitter blade and router tips; and
- (d) means for providing relative movement between said stock material and splitter blade and router tips substantially along the longitudinal axis of said stock material to split said stock material into substantially identical chord members while forming said longitudinal grooves; said means comprising at least one pair of drive rolls comprising top and bottom rolls extending transversely with respect to the direction of travel of the stock material for driving the stock material between them.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said supporting means includes a bed plate and a fence adapted to respectively contact a bottom surface and a lateral edge of said stock material and thereby prevent significant deviation of the longitudinal axis of said stock material during cutting.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said splitter blade and router tips are mounted on a common shaft extending transversely above the bed plate.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said router tips are a pair of router blades, and means for spacing said router blades from said splitter blade.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the top drive roll is mounted for pivoting to accommodate stock material of varying height.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 further comprising means for resiliently biasing the top drive roll downward, toward the bottom drive roll.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising:
- a cross shaft extending generally parallel to the top drive roll;
- a pair of links extending between the cross shaft and the top drive roll for pivotally mounting the top drive roll relative to the cross shaft to accommodate stock material of varying height;
- a drive sprocket on the cross shaft;
- a driven sprocket on the top drive roll;
- drive means for connecting the drive sprocket on the cross shaft and the driven sprocket on the top drive roll so that rotation of the cross shaft drives the top drive roll; and
- means for rotating the cross shaft.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the means for rotating the cross shaft comprises:
- a driven sprocket on the cross shaft;
- a driven sprocket on the bottom drive roll;
- drive means for connecting the driven sprocket on the bottom drive roll and the driven sprocket on the cross shaft; and means for driving the drive means to simultaneously drive the cross shaft and the bottom drive roll.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein there are two pairs of drive rolls, an in-feed pair positioned upstream of the splitter blade and an out-feed pair positioned downstream of the splitter blade.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein each top drive roll is mounted for pivoting to accommodate stock material of varying height.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising means for resiliently biasing each top drive rolls downward, toward its respective bottom drive roll.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 9 further comprising:
- a cross shaft extending generally parallel to each top drive roll;
- a pair of links extending between each cross shaft and its respective top drive roll for pivotally mounting the top drive roll relative to the cross shaft to accommodate stock material of varying height;
- a drive sprocket on each cross shaft;
- a driven sprocket on each top drive roll;
- drive means for connecting the drive sprocket on each cross shaft and the driven sprocket on its respective top drive roll so that rotation of the cross shaft drives the top drive roll; and means for rotating the cross shafts.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the means for rotating the cross shafts comprises:
- a driven sprocket on each cross shaft;
- a driven sprocket on each bottom drive roll;
- drive means for connecting the driven sprockets on the bottom drive rolls and the driven sprockets on the cross shafts; and
- means for driving the drive means to simultaneously drive the cross shafts and the bottom drive rolls.
