Claims
- 1. An apparatus for manufacturing a hot-fillable plastic container comprising:
- a first blow mold for blow-molding a preform into a primary molded article having a capacity larger than that of the plastic container and having an open mouth;
- means for heating the primary molded article so that the primary molded article shrinks and for continuing to heat the article as it shrinks to produce a shrunken primary article;
- means for sealing the mouth of the primary molded article while in the means for heating to enable pressure within the primary molded article to increase as the article shrinks to provide resistance against shrinkage; and
- a final blow mold for blow-molding the shrunken primary molded article into the plastic container having a capacity less than that of the primary molded article.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for limiting the pressure within the primary molded article, the means for limiting being in communication with the means for sealing.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for heating is an oven.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for sealing is a cap.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the cap has a pressure relief valve.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the cap has means for limiting the pressure within the primary article.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for cooling a neck portion of the primary article while the primary article is in the means for heating.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for injection molding to form the preform.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for enhancing heat-resistance of a neck portion of the preform.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for biasing a bottom of the primary molded article outward during heating.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the means for biasing comprises an extendible rod.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the means for biasing comprises a rod having a bottom positioned for engaging a center of the bottom of the primary molded article.
- 13. An apparatus for manufacturing a hot-fillable plastic container comprising:
- a first blow mold for blow-molding a preform using pressure into a primary molded article having a capacity larger than that of the plastic container and having an open mouth;
- means for heating the primary molded article outside of the first blow mold so that the primary molded article shrinks to produce a shrunken primary article;
- means for sealing the mouth of the primary molded article while in the means for heating to enable pressure within the primary molded article to be above atmospheric pressure while the article shrinks to provide resistance against shrinkage; and
- a final blow mold for blow-molding the shrunken primary molded article into the plastic container having a capacity less than that of the primary molded article.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising means for cooling a neck portion of the primary article while the primary article is in the means for heating.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising means for injection molding to form the preform.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising means for enhancing heat-resistance of a neck portion of the preform.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising means for biasing a bottom of the primary molded article outward during heating.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the means for biasing comprises an extendible rod.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the means for sealing has means in communication therewith for limiting the pressure within the primary article.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the means for sealing comprises a cap, and the means for limiting comprises a pressure relief valve.
