Claims
- 1. An apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate, comprising:
- a first roller having a rough surface for marring the fiber optic substrate;
- a second roller defining a nip with the first roller;
- means for driving said rollers synchronously;
- means for repeatedly opening and closing said nip to gradually adjust the pressure in the nip and to transmit a repetitive pressure profile to the nip; and
- wherein the second roller has a deformable surface.
- 2. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 1, wherein said means for driving has adjustable speeds.
- 3. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 1 further comprising a means for heating at least one of the rollers.
- 4. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 1, wherein said adjusting means comprises a pivotally mounted arm assembly for moving one of said first and second rollers with respect to another one of said first and second rollers.
- 5. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 4, wherein said another one of said first and second rollers is mounted to a frame and said one of said first and second rollers is mounted to said arm assembly, wherein said arm assembly is pivotally mounted to a pivot which is affixed to said frame, and wherein said adjusting means further comprises means for rotating said arm assembly about said pivot.
- 6. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 5, wherein said rotating means comprising a cam operatively connected to rotate said arm assembly about said pivot.
- 7. An apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate, comprising:
- a first roller having a rough surface for marring the fiber optic substrate;
- a second roller defining a nip with the first roller;
- means for driving said rollers synchronously;
- a second pair of rollers arranged to draw the substrate through the apparatus when the first roller and second roller are not in engagement with the substrate; and
- means for repeatedly opening and closing said nip to gradually adjust the pressure in the nip and to transmit a repetitive pressure profile to the nip.
- 8. The apparatus for marring a fiber optic substrate set forth in claim 7 wherein at least one of the rollers is serrated.
