Claims
- 1. An apparatus for applying a plastic cap to a shank, wherein said shank has a head and at least one leg comprising:
- a carrier member having a surface;
- a shank insertion device having means for removably inserting said leg of said shank into said carrier member such that at least a portion of said head of said shank is elevated above said surface;
- a molding device having means for molding plastic caps onto said head of said shank; and
- means for drawing said carrier member and feeding it to said shank insertion device and molding device.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said carrier member comprises a continuous elongated roll of strip material rotatably carried on a support frame.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for molding comprises an open cavity that is engageable with said carrier member to form a closed cavity with said carrier member.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for removably inserting inserts a plurality of shanks at a time onto said carrier member.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for molding molds a plurality of caps onto said shanks at a time.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 1, further including a contour forming device having means for forming at least one raised contour in said carrier member prior to insertion of said shank, and said means for removably inserting acts to insert said leg of said shank into said raised contour of said carrier member.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said raised contour is circular shaped and said means for removably inserting inserts a single shank into each raised contour.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said means for forming forms a plurality of contours at a time on said carrier member.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said carrier member is arranged with said surface facing said open cavity, said open cavity is defined by a wall fashioned to flushly abut said surface enclosing said head therein, and said cavity provides an injection port through said wall defining said cavity for injecting plastic into said cavity.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for removably inserting comprises:
- a retaining head holding at least one shank therein and having a bottom edge, said head of said shank retained elevated from said bottom edge, and said leg of said shank protruding downwardly of said bottom edge;
- a platform holding the carrier member thereon in a horizontal arrangement, said platform providing pockets therein arranged beneath said carrier member and vertically aligned with said leg of said shank, said retaining head reciprocally movable toward said platform with said bottom edge abutable to said surface.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said platform provides a block having a vertical passage holding at least one vertical pin therein, said vertical pin reciprocally movable through said vertical passage toward said carrier member, said pocket being formed in said vertical pin, said vertical pin and said bottom edge adapted to clamp said carrier member therebetween.
- 12. An apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said apparatus further comprises a contour forming device having means for forming a raised contour in said carrier member prior to insertion of said shank, and said means for inserting inserts said leg of said shank into said raised contour of said carrier member, said vertical pin shaped to interfit into said raised contour and to support an underside of said raised contour during insertion of said leg into said carrier member.
- 13. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said carrier member comprises a deformable material and said means for forming comprises:
- an upper ram portion;
- a die plate having at least one downwardly opening die opening, said die plate mounted to said upper ram portion; and
- a supporting anvil block having at least one vertical passage therethrough, said supporting anvil block holding said carrier member thereon, said upper ram portion arranged above said carrier member and reciprocally movable toward said supporting anvil block; and
- at least one punch pin reciprocally movable through said vertical passage in said anvil block toward said carrier member, said punch pin aligned with said die opening, said punch pin arranged to move vertically upward toward said downwardly moving die opening and arranged to deform said carrier member into said die opening to form said raised contour.
- 14. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said carrier member is arranged with said surface facing said open cavity, and said open cavity is fashioned to flushly abut said surface surrounding said head and said raised contour therein, and said cavity provides an injection port through a wall of said cavity for injecting plastic into said cavity.
- 15. An apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said means for removably inserting comprises:
- a retaining head holding at least one shank therein and having a bottom edge, said head of said shank retained elevated from said bottom edge, and said leg of said shank protruding downwardly of said bottom edge;
- a platform holding the carrier member thereon in a horizontal arrangement, said platform providing pockets therein arranged beneath said carrier member and vertically aligned with said leg of said shank, said retaining head reciprocally movable toward said platform with said bottom edge abutable to said surface.
- 16. An apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said platform provides a block having a vertical passage holding at least one pin therein, said vertical pin reciprocally movable through said vertical passage toward said carrier member, said pocket being formed in said vertical pin, said vertical pin and said bottom edge adapted to clamp said carrier member therebetween.
- 17. An apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said vertical pin is shaped to interfit into said raised contour and to support an underside of said raised contour during insertion of said leg through said carrier member.
