Claims
- 1. An apparatus for orienting a plurality of truss plates, each of said truss plates comprising a generally planar backing member and a plurality of impaling members extending from one side thereof, said orienting means comprising:
- a generally horizontally-disposed shelf having a transverse edge, said shelf being sized and positioned so that a transverse portion of a truss plate placed thereon is unsupported thereby; and
- a receiving channel positioned below said shelf having side walls, said side walls being sized and positioned so that receipt of a truss plate therein causes said received truss plate to take a predetermined orientation in which the backing member of each truss plate is generally parallel to a predetermined plane.
- 2. The apparatus defined in claim 1, further comprising means for forming said truss plates operatively coupled with said orienting means.
- 3. The apparatus defined in claim 2, wherein said forming means is configured so that truss plates exiting said forming means are oriented with their impaling members extending downwardly.
- 4. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein one of said channel side walls is spaced transversely from said shelf transverse edge, and wherein said side wall slopes downwardly toward said shelf transverse edge.
- 5. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said shelf has a pair of transverse edges, and wherein said shelf is sized transversely so that, when a pair of said truss plates are positioned in side-by-side relationship thereon, with a transverse edge of each truss plate being adjacent a transverse edge of the other truss plate, and with the backing members of said truss plates being generally coplanar, nonadjacent transverse edges of said truss plates are unsupported by said shelf.
- 6. The apparatus defined in claim 5, further comprising a pair of receiving channels, each of which is positioned below a respective one of said shelf transverse edges.
- 7. The apparatus defined in claim 1, further comprising means for directing a fluid stream onto the unsupported transverse edge of said truss plate to encourage said truss plate to drop into said receiving channel.
- 8. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said forming means is configured so that truss plates formed thereby have backing members with a plurality of elongate apertures, and wherein said impaling members are arranged in pairs, with one impaling member of each pair being positioned adjacent one end of an elongate aperture, and the other impaling member of the pair being positioned opposite the other end of that aperture.
- 9. The apparatus defined in claim 2, wherein said forming means is configured to receive a single sheet of sheet material and produce therefrom a plurality of streams of truss plates, and wherein said apparatus comprises a sufficient number of shelves to provide a plurality of transverse edges, each of which receives truss plates from one of said plurality of truss plate streams, and further comprises a plurality of receiving channels, each of which is positioned below a corresponding shelf transverse edge to receive and orient truss plates from one of said plurality of truss plate streams into a predetermined orientation in which the backing members of the truss plates are generally parallel to a predetermined plane.
- 10. The apparatus defined in claim 9, wherein said forming means includes means for conveying said plurality of streams of truss plates to said orienting means such that each truss plate of each stream has a tranverse edge that is adjacent to a transverse edge of a truss plate of an adjacent stream, and wherein said shelves are configured so that the backing members of the truss plates of each stream are generally coplanar, and each of said shelf tranverse edges is positioned so that as truss plates descend from their corresponding shelf transverse edges to their respective receiving channels, the impaling members of each truss plate extend toward the backing member of an adjacent truss plate.

This application is a division of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 08/364,609, filed Dec. 27, 1994, which is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 08/232,899, filed Apr. 25, 1994 now U.S. Pat. No. 5,392,908, for PACKAGING METHOD AND CONFIGURATION FOR TRUSS PLATES, the disclosures of which are hereby incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.
