Claims
- 1. Apparatus for performing catalytic reactions comprising an elongated casing having top and bottom closure means, said top closure means comprising an inlet and said bottom closure means comprising an outlet, a plurality of vertically and serially disposed beds of particulate solid within said casing, at least one of said plurality of beds being a catalyst bed containing catalytically active particulate solids and at least one of said plurality of beds being a catalytically inert bed containing particulate solids different from said catalytically active solids and being catalytically inert, said bed of catalytically inert solids being disposed directly next to and in communication with said inlet; indirect heat exchange means having an inlet and outlet and extending vertically throughout said plurality of beds from said bottom closure means to said top closure means; and a source of heat exchange fluid in communication with the inlet of the indirect heat exchange means and being isolated form direct communication with said plurality of beds.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, comprising at least two catalyst beds and wherein a catalytically inert bed is positioned between two of the catalyst beds.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a catalytically inert bed is positioned downstream from said at least one catalyst bed.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of catalyst beds are positioned alternately between a plurality of catalytically inert beds.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the plurality of catalyst beds contain different catalyst materials.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1, comprising at least two catalytically inert beds, one positioned upstream and one positioned downstream of said at least one catalyst bed, and an additional inlet entering directly into said downstream substantially catalytically inert bed.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said indirect heat exchange means comprises a heat exchange coil extending vertically and continuously throughout the plurality of beds from said bottom closure means to said top closure means.
