Claims
- 1. Apparatus for fabricating belts comprising
- (a) a web supply means for supplying a web having a leading edge from a web supply roll,
- (b) web cutter means adapted to sever said web to form a web segment having a trailing edge, a midsection and said leading edge,
- (c) an adjustable web pick up means adapted to temporarily grip said web and pull said leading edge a predetermined distance downstream from said web cutter means,
- (d) a first invertable gripper means adjacent to said web cutter means, said first invertable gripper means being adapted to temporarily grip the lower surface of said trailing edge of said web,
- (e) means to invert said first invertable gripper and loop said trailing edge of said web segment over said midsection of said web segment,
- (f) a second invertable gripper means spaced downstream from said first invertable gripper means, said second invertable gripper means being adapted to temporarily grip the lower surface of said leading edge of said web,
- (g) means to activate said web pick up means to transport said leading edge of said web upstream to a location adjacent to and above said second invertable gripper means,
- (h) means to invert said second invertable gripper and loop said leading edge of said web segment over the midsection of said web segment whereby said leading edge forms a lap joint with said trailing edge and said midsection of said web segment forms the bottom of a loop loosely suspended from said lap joint,
- (i) a belt welding station comprising means adapted to weld said lap joint,
- (j) a belt conveying anvil comprising an elongated arm having a free end, a supported end and at least one opening extending along the upper surface of said elongated arm,
- (k) means to form a partial vacuum within said opening,
- (l) an anvil transporting means adapted to support said supported end of said anvil and adapted to position said upper surface of said elongated arm within said loop and below said lap joint of said web,
- (m) means to activate said first invertable gripper and said second invertable gripper to transfer said web at said lap joint to said upper surface of said elongated arm of said anvil,
- (n) means to activate said means to form a partial vacuum within said opening of said elongated arm of said anvil to secure said lap joint to said upper surface of said elongated arm of said anvil,
- (m) means to convey said elongated arm and said loosely suspended loop to said belt welding station, and
- (o) means to activate said welding station to weld said lap joint while said lap joint is secured to said elongated arm of said anvil to form a welded belt.
- 2. Apparatus for fabricating belts comprising, in combination,
- (a) a belt loop forming station comprising
- (1) supply means for supplying a web having a leading edge from a web supply roll to said belt loop forming station,
- (2) a web receiving platform,
- (3) web retention means adapted to temporarily retain said leading edge of said web on said web receiving platform,
- (4) web pick up means adapted to temporarily grip said web and pull said leading edge a predetermined distance downstream from said web receiving platform,
- (5) web cutter means adapted to sever said web to form a web segment having a trailing edge, a midsection and said leading edge,
- (6) a first invertable gripper means adjacent to said web receiving platform, said first invertable gripper means being adapted to temporarily grip the lower surface of said trailing edge of said web,
- (7) means to invert said first invertable gripper and loop said trailing edge of said web segment over said midsection of said web segment,
- (8) a second invertable gripper means spaced downstream from said first invertable gripper means, said second invertable gripper means being adapted to temporarily grip the lower surface of said leading edge of said web,
- (9) means to transport said web pick up means and said leading edge of said web upstream to a location adjacent to and above said second invertable gripper means,
- (10) means to invert said second invertable gripper and loop said leading edge of said web segment over the midsection of said web segment whereby said leading edge forms a lap joint with said trailing edge and said midsection of said web segment forms the bottom of a loop loosely suspended from said lap joint, and
- (11) reciprocating means to alter the relative distance of the upper surface of an anvil from said first invertable gripper and said second invertable gripperupper surface of an anvil;
- (b) a belt welding station comprising means adapted to weld said lap joint;
- (c) a belt conveying anvil comprising
- (1) an elongated arm having a free end, a supported end and at least one opening extending along the upper surface of said elongated arm, and
- (2) means to form a partial vacuum within said opening;
- (d) an anvil transporting means adapted to support said supported end of said anvil and adapted to position said upper surface of said elongated arm below and spaced from said lap joint of said web;
- (e) means to activate said reciprocating means to simultaneously lower said first invertable gripper and said second invertable gripper to transfer said web at said lap joint to said upper surface of said elongated arm of said anvil;
- (f) means to activate said means to form a partial vacuum within said opening of said anvil to secure said lap joint to said upper surface of said elongated arm of said anvil;
- (g) means to activate said reciprocating means to simultaneously raise said first invertable gripper and said second invertable gripper away from said elongated arm of said anvil;
- (h) means to convey said elongated arm and said loosely suspended loop from said belt loop forming station to said belt welding station; and
- (i) means to activate said welding station to weld said lap joint while said lap joint is secured to said elongated arm of said anvil to form a welded belt.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein
- (a) said web receiving platform comprises a cutting edge downstream from said web supply roll, said cutting edge being perpendicular to the path of said web;
- (b) said web retention means being adapted to temporarily retain said leading edge of said web adjacent said cutting edge;
- (c) said web pick up means being adapted to pull said leading edge a predetermined distance downstream from said cutting edge of said web receiving platform;
- (d) said cutter means is adapted to sever said web along said cutting edge of said platform to form said web segment having said trailing edge; and
- (f) said first invertable gripper means is positioned adjacent to said cutting edge of said web receiving platform prior to gripping said lower surface of said downstream edge of said web.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3 including control means to select different distances that said web pick up means pulls said leading edge downstream from said cutting edge of said web receiving platform thereby forming belts having different predetermined circumferences.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 2 including a belt discharge station adjacent to said belt welding station and adapted to remove said welded belt from said elongated arm of said anvil and means for conveying said elongated arm of said anvil to said discharge station for removal of said welded belt from said elongated arm of said anvil.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said discharge station comprises at least one suction means adapted to grip said welded belt at said lap joint, lift said belt away from said upper surface of said elongated arm of said anvil and substantially horizontally convey said belt away from said free end of said elongated arm.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 2 including a belt notching station between to said belt loop forming station and said belt welding station, said belt notching station adapted to remove any weld flashing formed at each end of the welded lap joint of said welded belt while said welded belt is supported on said elongated arm of said anvil.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to centrally support the supported end of the elongated arm of three anvils, the free ends of each elongated arm extending outwardly from the centrally supported end and being substantially equidistant from the free ends of the two adjacent elongated arms.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to convey said welded belt on an anvil from said belt welding station to a belt notching station while simultaneously conveying another anvil to said belt forming station.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to convey said welded belt on an anvil from said belt notching station to a discharge station while simultaneously conveying another anvil from said belt loop forming station to said welding station.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to impart rotary movement and linear movement to said three anvils.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to impart a linear movement to said three anvils to convey said welded belt on an anvil from said belt welding station to a belt notching station while simultaneously conveying another anvil to said belt forming station.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said anvil transporting means is adapted to impart a linear movement and a rotary movement to said three anvils to convey said welded belt on an anvil from said belt notching station to said discharge station while simultaneously conveying another anvil from said belt loop forming station to said welding station.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said web pick up means adapted to temporarily grip said web and pull said leading edge a predetermined distance downstream from said web receiving platform comprises a reciprocating pivotable arm having at least one vacuum port adapted to grip and transport said leading edge to said second invertable gripper.
- 15. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said belt loop forming station further comprises a pair of culling nip rolls downstream from said second invertable gripper means and said web pick up means is adapted to temporarily grip said web a short distance upstream from said leading edge to pull said leading edge downstream from said web receiving platform and feed said leading edge into the nip between said culling nip rolls.
- 16. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said belt welding station comprises means adapted to vertically advance an ultrasonic welding horn toward said lap joint from a retracted position and adapted to substantially horizontally traverse and weld said lap joint with said horn after said horn is vertically advanced toward said lap joint.
- 17. Apparatus according to claim 2 including means to control the sequence of activation of said means to invert said first invertable gripper and said means to invert said second invertable gripper thereby rendering selectable whether said leading edge of said web segment is located at the top or bottom of said lap joint.
