Claims
- 1. An embossing plate for use with a printing press to print an image in color on a medium comprising plate means adapted for mounting on the printing press and having a surface adapted for engagement with the medium, the surface having a pattern of three distinct surface relief configuration means thereon, the pattern of surface relief configuration means having a repetitive design which has portions of the surface corresponding respectively to each of the three surface relief configuration means whereby when the surface of the plate means is pressed against the medium by the printing press it forms three surface relief configurations in the medium which correspond to color separated halftones and each reflect a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle so as to form a printed copy of the color image.
- 2. An embossing plate as in claim 1 wherein the aggregate portions of the surface corresponding to a single surface relief configuration means form a color separated halftone of the image.
- 3. An embossing plate as in claim 1 wherein the portions of the surface in the repetitive design corresponding respectively to each of the three surface relief configuration means are of equal size.
- 4. An embossing plate as in claim 1 wherein the surface relief configuration means are diffraction gratings.
- 5. An embossing plate as in claim 4 wherein the diffraction gratings are substantially "V" shaped in cross-section.
- 6. An embossing plate as in claim 4 wherein the diffraction grating are substantially parabolic in cross-section.
- 7. An embossing plate as in claim 1 wherein the plate means is flexible to permit the plate means to be mounted to a cylindrical embossing drum for use in a rotary printing process.
- 8. An embossing plate as in claim 1 in combination with a cylindrical embossing drum for use in a rotary printing process, means for mounting the plate means to the cylindrical embossing drum.
- 9. An embossing plate for use with a cylindrical drum to print an image in color with an ink on a substrate comprising flexible plate means adapted for mounting on the cylindrical drum and having a surface adapted for engagement with the ink, the surface having a pattern of three color separated halftones of the image thereon, each of the color separated halftones being formed by a distinct surface relief configuration means whereby when the flexible plate means is mounted on the cylindrical drum it applies the ink to the substrate in the pattern of color separated halftones and embosses the ink to form a distinct surface relief configuration on each color separated halftone formed by the ink and whereby each surface relief configuration reflects a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle so as to create a print copy of the color image.
- 10. An embossing plate as in claim 9 wherein the surface relief configuration means are diffraction gratings.
- 11. A rotary printing apparatus for printing an image in color on a surface of a substrate with an ink comprising a cylindrical drum having an outer surface, flexible plate means having a surface, means for removably mounting the flexible plate means to the outer surface of the cylindrical drum, the surface of the flexible plate means being formed with three distinct patterns of embossing protuberances adapted for engaging the ink whereby the protuberances on the surface of the plate means emboss the ink to create three distinct surface relief configurations on the ink which each reflect a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle.
- 12. A rotary printing apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the three distinct patterns of embossing protuberances are formed as three color separated halftones of the image.
- 13. A rotary printing apparatus as in claim 12 together with means for supplying ink to the surface of the plate means to permit the plate means to apply the ink to the substrate.
- 14. A rotary printing apparatus as in claim 12 together with an additional cylindrical drum for applying the ink to the substrate prior to embossing of the ink with the surface of the plate means.
- 15. A rotary printing apparatus as in claim 11 together with an additional cylindrical drum, additional plate means carried by the additional cylindrical drum for applying the ink to the substrate as three color separated halftones of the image prior to embossing of the ink with the surface of the first named plate means.
