Claims
- 1. An apparatus for producing and collecting a liquid extract and a dry by-product from a mash of material, comprising: an extraction chamber having at least one open end, the chamber including a material inlet opening in proximity to the open end for filling the chamber with the mash and a liquid outlet opening for collecting the liquid extract, a by-product outlet opening for collecting the dry by-product, a piston, a plunger movable in the chamber to compress the mash, first means for coupling the plunger to the piston, enclosure means for closing the open end, first drive means for moving the piston to compress the mash within the extraction chamber and to expel the by-product therefrom, agitating means for agitating the mash, second means for coupling the agitating means to the piston, and second drive means for rotating the agitating means with respect to the plunger to agitate the mash.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first coupling means includes an elongated hollow shaft coupling the plunger to the piston.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the second coupling means includes an elongated shaft extending axially through the hollow shaft, plunger, and piston, the elongated shaft being coupled to the piston for relative rotation thereto.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the agitator is a conical-shaped member which includes a plurality of grooves in its peripheral surface.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the extraction chamber includes a housing having two open ends, the plunger being slidably receivable in a first open end of the chamber, and the filler opening being located in proximity to a second open end of the chamber.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the plunger includes a head mounted to the hollow shaft, the head having a thickness which is greater than the cross-sectional dimension of the filler opening to close the filler opening when the head is moved in proximity to the second open end of the chamber.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the closure means includes a second piston, a second plunger coupled to the second system, the second plunger being slidably receivable in the second open end of the chamber for closing the second open end of the housing and closing the filler opening during compression of the mash.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the second plunger includes a head, the head includes a first section having an outer cross-sectional dimension greater than the inner cross-sectional dimension of the chamber housing and a second section having an outer cross-sectional dimension generally equal to the inner cross-sectional dimension of the chamber which is axially movable within the chamber housing, axial movement of the second section of the head within the chamber housing being limited by engagement of the first section with the second open end of the chamber.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the second section of the head of the second plunger is elongated to close the filler opening when moved to its limit within the second open end of the chamber housing.
- 10. An apparatus for producing and collecting a liquid extract and a dry by-product from a mash of material, comprising an extraction chamber having an open end for expelling the dry by-product, the chamber including a material inlet opening in proximity to the open end, and a liquid outlet opening for collecting the liquid extract, a gate movable between a first position where the open end is open and a second position where the open end and the filler opening are closed, a plunger axially movable within the chamber for compressing the mash when the gate is in its second position and expelling the dry by-product when the gate is moved to its first position, control means for moving the gate and plunger, agitating means for agitating the mash within the chamber, coupling means for rotatably coupling the agitating means to the plunger such that the plunger and agitating means are moved coincidentally, and drive means for rotating the agitating means with respect to the plunger.
