Claims
- 1. A method for generating steam comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an evaporator-condenser in the form of a closed housing having two chambers separated by a barrier having separate vertically oriented surfaces in each chamber;
- (b) adding water vapor to one of the two chambers;
- (c) producing a falling film of concentrated brine on a surface in said one chamber for effecting the condensation of said water vapor by transferring the latent heat of condensation to the brine and diluting the brine; and
- (d) producing a falling film of water on a surface in the other of said two chambers for effecting vaporization of said water due, in part, to heat transferred from said brine film through said barrier to said film of water.
- 2. A condenser-evaporator comprising:
- (a) a closed housing having an internal barrier for separating the housing into first and second chambers;
- (b) said barrier defining a first vertically oriented surface in said one chamber and a second vertically oriented surface in the second chamber;
- (c) means to add concentrated brine onto said first surface for forming a falling film of brine thereon whereby said first chamber operates as a condenser when water vapor is introduced thereinto; and
- (d) means to add liquid water onto said second surface of said barrier for forming a falling film of water thereon whereby said second chamber operates as a vaporizer.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said barrier is constituted by an undulated member having a plurality of vertically oriented runs connected at the tops by rounded crests and at the bottom by rounded troughs, and means are provided for spraying concentrated brine on the top surface of said member, and spraying water on the bottom surface of said member.
- 4. The invention of claim 2 wherein said one surface includes the outer surface of a plurality of vertically oriented tubes, and said other surface includes the inner surface of said tubes.
- 5. The invention of claim 4 wherein said tubes are open at each axial end and are mounted in an upper horizontal plate that forms a reservoir for liquid working fluid and separates the interior of the heat exchanger into an upper evaporation compartment and a lower evaporation chamber, said tubes having free ends projecting into said reservoir and having means for effecting entry of liquid working fluid from the reservoir into the inside of said tubes.
- 6. The invention of claim 5 wherein an intermediate horizontal plate is located below said upper plate for forming a reservoir for concentrated brine, and means are provided on said intermediate plate for effecting entry of concentrated brine form the last mentioned reservoir onto the outside of said tubes.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said barrier is heat conductive.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said means to add concentrated brine includes spray headers for producing a laminar flow of brine on said first surface.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein said means to add liquid water includes spray headers for producing a laminar flow of liquid water on said second surface.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said barrier comprises an undulated member having a plurality of vertically-oriented runs connected at the top by rounded crests and at the bottom by rounded troughs, said barrier being constructed and arranged so that the upper surface thereof constitutes said first surface of said first chamber and the lower surface of said barrier constitutes said second surface in said second chamber.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 including a first plurality of drains for collecting and discharging brine falling from said first surface.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 including a second plurality of drains for collecting and discharging liquid water falling from said second surface.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 9 including means for preheating said liquid water before adding the water to said second surface.
