Claims
- 1. Apparatus for producing press-molded articles having a plurality of cavities therein, from particulate pressable material, comprising:
- means defining a mold cavity (34),
- a plurality of rods, said rods being sheathed with expandable tubes (52) at least over part of their length, each of said expandable tubes (52) having a wall surface defining an interior space and being fitted over the associated said rod (24), in such a way that said rod substantially fills said interior space but is not adhering to said wall surface of said tube (52) along said part of the respective length,
- rod support means (22, 38, 40, 50, 20, 64, 56) carrying said sheathed rods (24), said rod support means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50) permitting displacement of said sheathed rods (24) between a first position inside said mold cavity (34) and a second position outside said mold cavity (34),
- filling means (76, 78, 86) for filling said cavity (34) with pressable particulate material, and
- pressure fluid supply means (48, 46) operating to supply fluid under pressure to said interior spaces of said expandable tubes (52), said rod support means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50, 20, 64, 56) including at least one apertured compressible squash plate (42, 64) having two opposite parallel major faces and a plurality of apertures having axes substantially orthogonal to said major faces for receiving one end of respective sheathed rods (24), and means (44, 38, 66, 56) for applying a compressive force to said two major faces of said squash plate to grip the ends of sheathed tubes in said apertures.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said at least one apertured compressible squash plate (42, 64) is located in contact with a surface of a respective mold end wall (22, 20) of said mold cavity (34), and
- pressure plate means (38, 56) are pressable against a surface of said compressible squash plate (42, 64) remote from the respective mold end wall to squash said compressible squash plate (42, 64) between the respective mold end wall (22, 20) and said pressure plate means (38, 56) upon the application of pressure to said pressure plate means (38, 56).
- 3. Apparatus for producing press-molded articles having a plurality of cavities therein, from particulate pressable material, comprising:
- means defining a mold cavity (34),
- a plurality of rods (24), said rods (24) being sheathed with expandable tubes (52) at least over part of their length, each of said expandable tubes (52) having a wall surface defining an interior space and being fitted over the associated said rod (24) in such a way that said rod substantially fills said interior space but is not adhering to said wall surface of said tube (52), said expandable tubes (52) being provided with closure means at first ends thereof to be introduced into said mold cavity (34) and being joined at seconds ends thereof with a plate (52x) made of the same material,
- rod support means carrying said sheathed rods, said rod support means being displaceable to move said sheathed rods between a first position inside said mold cavity (34) and a second position outside said mold cavity (34),
- filling means (76, 78, 86) for filling said mold cavity (34) with pressable particulate material, and
- pressure fluid supply means (46, 48 operating to supply fluid under pressure to said interior spaces of said expandable tubes (52).
- 4. The apparatus of claims 1 or 3, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) include a membrane (192) lining the inside of said mold cavity (34),
- membrane support means surrounding said membranes (192) and defining therewith a membrane pressure chamber, and
- pressure fluid delivery means (194) communicating with said membrane pressure chamber.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said sheathed rods (24) are held parallel to each other by said rod support means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50, 20, 64, 56).
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said membrane (192) is substantially cylindrical and has an axis lying parallel to said sheathed rods (24).
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 or 3 wherein said means defining said mold cavity includes two mold half shells (26a, 26b) displaceable between a mold closed position and a mold position and, said rod support means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50, 20, 64, 56) comprise first rod mounting means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50) releasably supporting said rods (24) at a first end thereof and second rod mounting means (20, 64, 56) releasably supporting said rods (24) at a second end thereof.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein said first rod mounting means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50) are movable parallel to the length of said rods (24) to move said rods (24) between said first position inside said mold cavity (34) and said second position outside said mold cavity (34), and
- drive means (16, 18) being provided for said rod mounting means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50) operating to move said rod mounting means between first and second position corresponding to said first and second positions of said sheathed rods (24).
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) further includes a first mold end wall (22) having a plurality of perforations through which said sheathed rods (24) extend, means connecting said first mold end wall (22) to said first rod mounting means (22, 38, 40, 42, 50) for joint movement therewith.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) further includes a second mold end wall (20) at an opposite end of said mold cavity (34) opposite to said first mold end wall (22),
- perforations being provided in said second mold end wall (20), said perforations receiving the ends of respective sheathed rods (24) when the latter are in said first position thereof in said mold cavity (34).
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) is provided with air extraction means (76, 78) for applying a vacuum thereto, means defining at least one inlet opening (86) for said particulate material, and means for applying a vacuum to said interior spaces of said expandable tubes to balance the pressure on either side of said expandable tubes (56) when a vacuum is applied to said mold cavity (34) for filling it with said particulate material, said air extraction means (76, 78) include at least one opening (78) at the junction between one (20) of said mold end walls (22, 20) and said mold half-shells (26a, 26b), and said at least one inlet opening (86) for said particulate material being positioned at the junction between said mold half-shells (26a, 26b) and the opposite said mold end wall (22).
- 12. The apparatus of claims 1 or 3, wherein said expandable tubes (52) are open at one end and said pressure fluid supply means (48, 46) includes a pressure fluid supply chamber (46) communicating with one end of each said expandable tube (52) and connected to a pressure fluid supply source (48).
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said one end (52a) of each said expandable tube (52) is widened into a funnel shape.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said sheathed rods (24) have fluid supply grooves (90) in their surface in communication with said interior space of said expandable tube (52).
- 15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said sheathed rods (24) have interior passage (54) therein in communication with said interior space of said expandable tube (52) fitted thereon, said interior passages (52) in said sheathed rods (24) communicating with said pressure fluid supply chamber (46).
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 or 3, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) is provided with air extraction means (76, 78) for applying a vacuum thereto, means defining at least one inlet opening (86) for said particulate material, and means for applying a vacuum to said interior spaces of said expandable tubes (52) to balance the pressures on either side of said expandable tubes (52) when a vacuum is applied to said mold cavity for filling it with said particulate material.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said particulate material inlet opening (86) is closable by means of a closing plunger (88) with an end surface the shape of which matches the shape of said mold cavity (34).
- 18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said air extraction means (76, 78) are located in a lower region of said mold cavity (34) and said particulate material inlet opening (86) is located in the upper region of said mold cavity (34).
- 19. The apparatus of claims 1 or 3, wherein said sheathed rods (24) extend vertically inside said mold cavity (34) and can be withdrawn upwards out of said mold cavity (34).
- 20. The apparatus of claims 1 or 3, wherein said means defining said mold cavity (34) include shaped pieces projecting into said mold cavity (34) to produce corresponding shapes on the outside of an article in said mold cavity (34).
