Claims
- 1. Apparatus for labelling containers comprising
- means for feeding a succession of rectilinear labels of a flexible sheet-like material in an on-edge attitude in a feed path defined by a vertical feed surface,
- a turret rotatably supported on a vertical shaft,
- plural mandrel means in circular array on said turret, each mandrel means having an annular mandrel surface rotatable about a vertical axis,
- drive means connected to rotate said turret and thereby move the mandrels in an orbit tangent with the feed path whereat the mandrel surface is engageable with the leading portion of the label, said mandrel means including a vacuum means for holding said engaged leading portion on the mandrel surface, the peripheral dimension of said mandrel surface being less than the length of the label,
- means connected to said rotatable mandrels surface and operable for winding said label thereon,
- elongated heater means on the turret individual to each mandrel and disposed axially with respect to said mandrel, a source of heated gaseous media, means for connecting said source to said individual heater means during orbital movement of the mandrels in response to wrapping the label on the mandrel surface for heating the interface of the leading and trailing end portions of the blank just prior to overlapping said portions on the mandrel, the said heated end portions overlapping one another on the mandrel in seam fashion, thereby forming the label into a side-seamed, hollow sleeve,
- pocket wheel means connected to the turret underlying the mandrels and rotatable about said vertical shaft, said wheel means having plural container receiving pockets corresponding with the mandrels, each pocket being in underlying registry with a mandrel,
- container inlet means conveying a single line of upright containers,
- guide means for engaging successive containers of said single line and loading them in said pockets of the wheel means in upright position in vertical registry with an overhead mandrel, said guide means extending through a partial orbit span of movement of the mandrels defining a label transfer station, and
- stripper means individual to each mandrel and operable in response to orbital movement of the mandrel through said label transfer station for axially stripping the formed sleeve downwardly from the mandrel and onto an underlying container.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the guide means comprises an arcuate fixed guide member mounted adjacent and parallel with the periphery of said wheel means in the label transfer station,
- said guide member intercepting upright containers in the line conveyed by said inlet means and guiding them along the arcuate path of the fixed guide member and into the container pockets of said wheel means for retaining them in said pockets through movement through the label transfer station.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, including container exit means for engaging containers in the pockets of said wheel means after movement beyond the label transfer station and conveying them in single line upright fashion away from the turret.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, said container exit means comprising an arcuate guide member supported in fixed position for intercepting containers in said pocketed wheel means beyond the label transfer station, a star wheel adjacent the wheel means beyond the label transfer station, the arcuate guide rail transferring intercepted containers into the star wheel, an exit conveyor, and a guide means for transferring containers from the star wheel onto said exit conveyor, the latter being driven for carrying containers bearing labels thereon from the apparatus.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the container inlet means comprises a powered conveyor advancing upright containers, a worm rotatably supported adjacent the conveyor for intercepting containers and discharging them at its terminal end portion, a guide rail spaced opposite said worm and defining a single line path for containers between said worm and said rail, drive means rotating the worm, the latter spacing containers in a single line.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, said container inlet means also including a first star wheel rotatably supported adjacent the terminal end of the worm, a guide rail around a portion of the periphery of said star wheel for guiding containers in the star wheel, a second guide rail intercepting containers in said first star wheel, a second star wheel rotatably supported in spaced relation to the first star wheel, said second guide rail being parallel with a portion of the second star wheel and guiding intercepted containers in said second star wheel, said second star conveying a single line of upright containers into engagement with the guide means for loading the pockets of the pocket wheel means on said turret.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, including an adhesive applicating nozzle, means supporting said nozzle adjacent the single line path for the containers, means connected to said nozzle for issuing adhesive from said nozzle and across said container path in response to container movement in said path, the nozzle applying a spot of adhesive onto the exterior surface of the container during movement of the latter past the nozzle.
