Claims
- 1. Apparatus for forming a continuous adherent coating layer on a major surface of a strip article, including
- (a) means defining a path of longitudinal advance of said article, including an extended wall facing said major surface of said article and so arranged that the advancing article moves longitudinally relative thereto;
- (b) means at one end of said wall constituting a dam extending transversely of the path of article advance so as to be disposed in adjacent spaced relation to the article major surface facing said wall;
- (c) means for supplying a first liquid coating material to the last-mentioned article major surface ahead of said dam, to establish thereon a continuous wet coating layer; and
- (d) means for uniformly restraining said article against movement of said major surface away from said wall beyond a predetermined distance during advance of said article past said wall, equal to a desired thickness of said wet coating layer, such that said major surface and said wall mutually define a gap entirely filled by said wet coating layer across the width of said layer;
- wherein the improvement comprises;
- (e) means for delivering through said wall, to at least one locality in said gap, a second liquid coating material under pressure sufficient to displace locally the first liquid coating material in the wet coating layer, thereby to establish a stripe of the second liquid coating material in the wet coating layer, said means including an aperture in said wall at said one locality for admitting said second liquid coating material to said gap.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said wall is planar; wherein said passage-defining means includes a disk having a surface coplanar with and constituting a portion of said wall; and wherein said delivering means includes a plurality of coating material delivering apertures opening through said disk surface at spaced locations, means mounting said disk for rotation about an axis perpendicular to said wall, passage means including a passage formed in said disk for delivering liquid coating material to said apertures, and means for supplying liquid coating material under pressure to said passage means.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 2, wherein said apertures are aligned in at least one row eccentric to said axis.
- 4. Apparatus as defined in claim 2, wherein said path-defining means further comprises structure having an extended planar surface constituting a fixed portion of said wall, with a transverse edge constituting said dam, and a circular recess formed in said last-mentioned surface, within which said disk is received, said disk being fabricated of magnetic material; stop means projecting into said recess to bear against said disk and adjustably mounted in said structure for movement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said wall to position said disk surface in coplanar relation to said fixed wall portion; and magnet means mounted in said structure for attracting said disk into engagement with said stop means.
- 5. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said wall has a groove formed therein, extending from said one aperture generally in the direction of advance of said article.
