Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use with a serial channel interface connecting a serial channel with a serial component said serial channel interface conforming to a predetermined protocol, said apparatus comprising:
- a repeater unit having a connector for connecting into a serial link between the serial channel and the serial component, said repeater unit repowering a plurality of serial bit streams passing in both directions on the serial link,
- wherein the apparatus further interrogates serial characters being repeated in both in both directions, but without disturbing the repowered serial bit streams,
- wherein the interrogated repeated serial characters are tested for being valid characters or code violations (CV's), and if the repeated serial characters are valid, then they are tested for being idle or non-idle.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a CV counter is provided for the repeater unit, and wherein a microprocessor (MP) periodically reads and resets CV counts and adds these counts to a plurality of accumulated CV counters within the MP.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein a seconds counter is provided for the repeater unit, and wherein the seconds counter counts exactly one second's worth of non-idle repeated characters in either direction of the serial link, and then indicates this to the MP which increments a plurality of accumulated seconds counters within the MP.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein an attached local monitoring computer periodically polls the MP to read and reset the accumulated CV counters and the accumulated seconds counters, the local monitoring computer adds the counts read from the MP to its own accumulated CV counts and non-idle usage seconds counts, and thresholds the total CV counts read over a period of time, and alerts the owner of the repeater and repeated link that link problem determination should be initiated if a CV threshold is exceeded.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1 including a local monitoring computer for reading and resetting the accumulated time of non-idle usage permitting an owner of the repeater and repeated link to bill the end point customers a base rate for the link itself plus an additional rate for the amount of non-idle usage during the billing period.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein voice data, normally digitized at a much lower bit frequency than digital data, causes nearly continuous CV's to be detected by the repeater, and wherein the CV's counted are provided to a local monitoring computer to alert an owner to the possibility that unexpected information is being transmitted through the serial link.
