Claims
- 1. A slitting apparatus for a stack of sheet material comprising:
- a cutting blade formed from a continuous flexible steel band including a butt edge and an opposite sharpened cutting edge;
- a pair of spaced blade drums having cylindrical surfaces rotatable on vertical axes, said drums supporting the blade for slitting movement with the cutting edge in a horizontal plane and defining a linear slitting path in a vertical plane between and tangent to the cylindrical surfaces of the drums;
- a blade holder supporting the cutting blade for movement along the linear slitting path, said holder having opposite ends and including a pair of jaws with open upper ends having opposite lateral bearing surfaces in sliding engagement with opposite side faces of the blade band and an internal portion vertically adjustable with respect to the jaws and having a blade supporting bearing surface in sliding engagement with the butt edge of the blade band;
- a blade holder mounting frame extending generally along the linear slitting path and including a base having blade holder mounts on opposite ends for attachment to the opposite ends of the blade holder for positioning the upper ends of the blade holder jaws to expose a selected portion of the side faces of the blade band including the cutting edge;
- a blade edge exposure adjustment mechanism interconnecting the mounting frame and the adjustable internal portion of the blade holder and operative to move the blade supporting bearing surface and blade upwardly to maintain the selected blade exposure with blade edge wear;
- a blade drum support frame carrying a pair of drum support plates rotatably supporting the blade drums, one of said drum support plates having a pivotal attachment to the drum support frame for rotational adjustment on a pivot axis normal to the drum axis and to the slitting plane; and,
- a blade biasing force adjustment mechanism interconnecting the drum support frame and the pivotally attached drum support plate and operative to rotate said one drum support plate on said pivot axis and adjust the position of the axis of rotation of the blade drum thereon to maintain a selected biasing force of the blade butt edge on the blade supporting bearing surface.
- 2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said blade holder comprises:
- a pair of wear strips defining said lateral bearing surfaces and attached to and forming the upper ends of said pair of jaws; and,
- the upper ends of said wear strips and the adjacent upper ends of said jaws defining divergent parting surfaces extending downwardly from the opposite side faces of the blade.
- 3. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 including a source of compressed air connected to apertures in the lateral bearing surfaces of said wear strips and forming an air bearing between said surfaces and the side faces of the blade.
- 4. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 including a biasing mechanism operatively interconnecting the jaws of said blade holder to bias said jaws closed to hold said lateral bearing surfaces in sliding engagement with the blade side faces.
- 5. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the blade supporting bearing surface comprises a wear resistant flat upper surface of an elongate bar extending substantially the full length of the blade holder.
- 6. The apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said blade edge exposure adjustment mechanism comprises:
- an adjustment plate mounted for vertical sliding movement between the base of the blade holder mounting frame and the blade holder; and,
- a series of laterally spaced vertically disposed pins having upper and lower ends and attached at said lower ends to said adjustment plate and extending upwardly through the blade holder jaws with said upper ends in operative engagement with a lower surface of said elongate bar; and
- an actuator mounted between the blade holder base and said adjustment plate to move said adjustment plate, said pins, said elongate bar and the cutting blade upwardly simultaneously.
- 7. The apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein said elongate bar is square in cross section and includes four identical hardened bearing surfaces.
