Claims
- 1. A spin pack for spinning mixed filament yarn from at least three components comprising:
- means for receiving three or more mutually separated molten polymer streams;
- a spinneret having at least one backhole and, and for each backhole, a fiber extrusion orifice in fluid flow communication therewith, at least one of said at least one backhole being an active backhole in fluid flow communication with said receiving means;
- upstream of said spinneret, a distribution device in fluid flow communication with said receiving means and having means for distributing said mutually separated molten polymer streams to said spinneret wherein each mutually separated molten polymer stream is accessible at every existing backhole; and
- intermediate said spinneret and said distribution device, a selection assembly having means for selecting which one stream from anyone of said mutually separated molten polymer streams flows into which active backhole.
- 2. The spin pack of claim 1 wherein said distributing means comprises a pool-forming plate for each stream, said pool-forming plate having a reservoir defined by a raised edge, and a through hole in said pool-forming plate for each backhole which through hole is aligned for fluid flow communication with the respective backhole, said reservoir in fluid flow communication with said receiving means to receive one of said mutually separated polymer streams.
- 3. The spin pack of claim 1 wherein said distributing means comprises a series of stacked distribution plates, each plate having grooves, each groove having means for accepting one of said mutually separated molten polymer streams from said receiving means and means for passing the respective mutually separated molten polymer stream downstream of the plate said passing means including through holes in said grooves.
- 4. The spin pack of claim 2 wherein said selection assembly has a single selecting hole for each active backhole, said selecting hole aligned and in fluid flow communication with one and only one of said through holes in one and only one of said pool-forming plates for each stream.
- 5. The spin pack of claim 3 wherein said selection assembly has a single selecting hole for each active backhole, said selecting hole aligned and in fluid flow communication with one and only one of said through holes in said grooves.
- 6. The spin pack of claim 2 wherein said selection assembly comprises a selection plate having selection holes and a downstream surface; and a keyhole plate abutting said downstream surface of said selection plate and lying upstream of said spinneret and having an upstream surface and one keyhole shaped orifice for each active backhole, said keyhole shaped orifice having a through hole and at least one keyhole groove in said upstream surface in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice and with one and only one of said selection holes.
- 7. The spin pack of claim 6 wherein said keyhole shaped orifice comprises two keyhole grooves in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice, said grooves disposed on opposite sides of said through hole in said upstream surface of said keyhole plate and said two grooves in said keyhole plate of approximately equal length.
- 8. The spin pack of claim 6 wherein said keyhole shaped orifice has a single keyhole groove having a first end and a second end opposite to said first end, said first end in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice, and said second end receiving fluid flow from a single selection hole.
- 9. The spin pack of claim 3 wherein said selection assembly comprises a selection plate having selection holes and a downstream surface; and a keyhole plate abutting said downstream surface of said selection plate and lying upstream of said spinneret and having an upstream surface and one keyhole shaped orifice for each active backhole, said keyhole shaped orifice having a through hole and at least one keyhole groove in said upstream surface in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice and with one and only one of said selection holes.
- 10. The spin pack of claim 9 wherein said keyhole shaped orifice comprises two keyhole grooves in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice, said grooves disposed on opposite sides of said through hole in said upstream surface of said keyhole plate and said two grooves in said keyhole plate of approximately equal length.
- 11. The spin pack of claim 9 wherein said keyhole shaped orifice has a single keyhole groove having a first end and a second end opposite to said first end, said first end in fluid flow communication with said through hole in said keyhole shaped orifice, and said second end receiving fluid flow from a single selection hole.
