Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a part made of a material that exhibits superplastic properties at elevated temperatures, the part having a body with an integral tubular pullout having a lead-in radiused portion ending in a tubular lip protruding from a region of the body, comprising:
a die having a die cavity including a protruding cavity portion shaped like the desired external configuration of the part in the region of said protruding pullout; a heater for heating the body in the region of the protruding pullout to a temperature at which the material exhibits superplastic properties; a pull die having a cross-sectional shape and size about equal to the desired internal configuration of the tubular lip; an activation unit coupled to the pull-die for moving the pull die at least partially into a hole in the material to form the pullout against internal surfaces of the protruding cavity portion; and a programmable controller for controlling operation of the activation unit to move the pull die at least partially into the protruding cavity portion on a pull rate schedule that stretches the tube material.
- 2. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the body is a tubular structure; and further comprising:
a retaining sleeve received concentrically within the tubular structure for holding the tubular structure against the cavity to prevent puckering of the tubular structure as the material is superplastically formed by movement of the pull die into the protruding cavity portion.
- 3. An apparatus as defined in claim 2, further comprising:
a clamp member for clamping a lip portion of the material immediately around the hole while the activation unit moves the pull-die away from the protruding cavity portion of the die cavity to stretch an intermediate portion of the material outside of said lip portion while holding the lip portion against stretching, and for releasing the lip portion after laying the stretched intermediate portion on the protruding cavity portion; the pull die having surfaces that form the lip portion against the protruding cavity portion when the activation unit moves the pull die further into the protruding cavity portion after laying the stretched intermediate portion on the protruding cavity portion.
- 4. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein:
the pull die has an external shape like the internal shape of the lead-in radiused portion of the pullout; and the protruding cavity portion of the die cavity is sized to receive a stub tube onto which the pullout can be formed and pressed against for diffusion bonding of the pullout to the stub tube.
- 5. An apparatus as defined in claim 3, wherein:
the clamp member includes a clamping tube telescopically disposed on a pull-rod connecting the activation unit and the pull-die; and an actuator for moving said clamping tube on the pull-rod independently of the pull-rod.
