Claims
- 1. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components having a mass, comprising:
- a base member including a plurality of discrete and orthogonally positioned leg members for engaging a flooring surface;
- a substantially vertical support pole extending upward from said base member and releasably coupled thereto;
- at least one bushing, concentrically engaging said substantially vertical support pole at a particular axial location;
- at least one support arm, extending radially outward from said at least one bushing at a particular orientation; and
- at least one support surface, secured to said at least one support arm, said at least one support surface being positioned substantially orthogonal to said substantially vertical support pole and adapted for receiving and supporting said modular and cooperating components at particular axial and angular positions relative to said base member and said substantially vertical support pole;
- locator means for (a) substantially fixing automatically during assembly through gravity bias said substantially vertical support pole in position relative to said base member in five out of six degrees of freedom, and (b) allowing movement automatically after assembly of said at least one support arm and associated at least one support surface to a predefined range of movement relative to said at least one bushing in order to locate said mass of said modular and cooperating components to a particular range of stable positions defined by said discrete and orthogonally positioned plurality of leg members of said base member.
- 2. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position.
- 3. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 2:
- wherein said plurality of leg members are disposed orthogonally to one another.
- 4. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 2:
- wherein said sleeve member defines an inner surface and an outer surface; and
- wherein a fastener seat is secured to said inner surface of said sleeve member for engaging said substantially vertical support pole and substantially fixing said vertical support pole relative to said base member.
- 5. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 4:
- wherein said fastener seat includes an inclined seating surface which engages a lowermost portion of said substantially vertical support pole and which allows the weight of said substantially vertical support pole to urge portions of said substantially vertical support pole into substantially fixed engagement with a portion of said inner surface of said sleeve member.
- 6. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 5:
- wherein said fastener seat includes (a) an apex portion in a distal position relative to said inner surface and (b) a plurality of downwardly sloping edges extending from said apex to said inner surface; and
- wherein, during assembly, gravity biases said substantially vertical support pole downwardly and inwardly along said plurality of downwardly sloping edges until said substantially vertical support pole contacts at least a portion of said inner surface.
- 7. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 2:
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned.
- 8. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 7:
- wherein said at least one key-feed port includes an internally threaded portion; and
- wherein said locking key includes an externally threaded portion for engaging said internally threaded portion of said at least one key-feed port.
- 9. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 8:
- wherein said locking key includes a knob portion which is utilized during installation to engage said at least one latching cavity with said locking key.
- 10. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 7:
- wherein engagement of said at least one latching cavity with said locking key restricts rotation of said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member.
- 11. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position;
- wherein said sleeve member defines an inner surface and an outer surface;
- wherein a fastener seat is secured to said inner surface of said sleeve member for engaging said support pole and fixing said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member except for rotation;
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned; and
- wherein engagement of said at least one latching cavity with said locking key limits rotation of said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member.
- 12. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said at least one bushing is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a predetermined rotation range.
- 13. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said at least one bushing includes (a) a hub portion which is rotatable and which includes a central bore for concentrically receiving said substantially vertical support pole, and (b) a hub pin for maintaining said hub portion in a fixed axial position relative to said substantially vertical support pole.
- 14. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein a lower portion of said hub portion engages said hub pin.
- 15. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 14:
- wherein said lower portion of said hub portion includes at least one contoured portion to define a predetermined range of permissible rotation for said hub portion.
- 16. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 15:
- wherein said at least one contoured portion comprises castellation which limits rotation of said hub portion to said predefined range of permissible rotation.
- 17. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein said at least one bushing further includes (c) a bushing insert carried within said hub portion, which includes a particular contoured portion which limits rotation of said hub portion to a predefined range of permissible rotation for said hub portion.
- 18. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 17:
- wherein said contoured portion of said bushing insert slidably engages said hub pin over a predetermined region on said contoured portion of said bushing insert.
- 19. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 17:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position; and
- wherein said bushing insert is mateable to said base member to orient said modular and cooperating components in a particular position relative to said plurality of leg members.
- 20. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 19:
- wherein said base member includes said plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein said bushing insert restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 21. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein said hub pin includes an eyelet portion for receiving and securing conductors which extend between said modular and cooperating components.
- 22. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 21, further comprising:
- a sheath for enclosing said conductors which extends between said modular and cooperating components.
- 23. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein said hub portion further includes a contoured lower portion between stop members;
- wherein said hub pin includes (a) an eyelet portion for receiving and securing conductors which extend between said modular and cooperating components, (b) a load bearing portion for engaging a lowermost portion of said hub portion and preventing downward axial displacement and (c) a range limiting portion for slidably engaging said contoured lower portion of said hub portion between said stop members to allow a predetermined range of rotational movement relative to said substantially vertical support pole.
- 24. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 23:
- wherein said hub portion includes a bushing insert which defines said contoured lower portion.
- 25. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein each of said at least one bushing further includes (c) a bushing insert which is adapted to be inserted concentrically within said hub portion in a preselected orientation.
- 26. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes a plurality of bushing station ports which extend therethrough and which define a plurality of possible axial positions for engagement of a selected one of said at least one bushing.
- 27. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 26:
- wherein, during installation, said hub pin is inserted in a particular one of said plurality of bushing station ports, and said hub portion is lowered over said substantially vertical support pole into engagement with said hub pin.
- 28. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 27:
- wherein said hub portion is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range defined by interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin.
- 29. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 28:
- wherein said at least one bushing further include a bushing insert which is received by said hub portion; and
- wherein said at least one bushing is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range of rotation defined by interaction of said bushing insert and said hub pin.
- 30. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 29:
- wherein said base member includes a plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein said bushing insert restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 31. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 13:
- wherein each of said at least one bushing further includes (c) a hub pin retainer member which prevents inadvertent removal of said hub pin.
- 32. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position;
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned;
- wherein said at least one bushing includes (a) a hub portion which is rotatable and which includes a central bore for concentrically receiving said substantially vertical support pole, and (b) a hub pin for maintaining said hub portion in a fixed axial position relative to said substantially vertical support pole;
- wherein said hub portion is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range defined by interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin;
- wherein said base member includes a plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 33. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1:
- wherein said at least one support surface is pivotally coupled to a selected one of said at least one support arm.
- 34. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 33:
- wherein said at least one support surface comprises a single piece of a relatively low profile but sturdy material.
- 35. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 33:
- wherein a pivotal coupling between said at least one support surface and said at least one support arm comprises:
- a coupling bore extending through said at least one support surface at a central location;
- a coupling pin extending through said coupling bore and securing said at least one support surface to said at least one support arm;
- wherein said at least one support surface is fully rotatable relative to said at least one support arm.
- 36. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 35, further comprising:
- a locking member for fixing said at least one support surface in rotational orientation relative to said at least one support arm.
- 37. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 36:
- wherein said locking member includes an internally threaded locking knob for engaging an externally threaded portion of said coupling pin.
- 38. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 33, further comprising:
- male and female mating members coupled between said at least one support surface and said at least one support arm, for slightly impeding rotational movement and especially impeding vibration-induced rotational movement.
- 39. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 1, further comprising:
- at least one leveling member coupled to said base member for positioning said base member relative to said flooring surface.
- 40. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components having a mass, comprising:
- a base member for engaging a flooring surface including (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position;
- wherein said sleeve member defines an inner surface and an outer surface;
- a substantially vertical support pole extending upward from said base member and releasably coupled thereto;
- wherein a fastener seat is secured to said inner surface of said sleeve member for engaging said substantially vertical support pole and substantially fixing said vertical support pole relative to said base member;
- at least one bushing, concentrically engaging said substantially vertical support pole at a particular axial location;
- at least one support arm, extending radially outward from said at least one bushing at particular orientation; and
- at least one support surface, secured to said at least one support arm, said at least one support surface being positioned substantially orthogonal to said substantially vertical support pole and adapted for receiving and supporting said modular and cooperating components at particular axial and angular positions relative to said base member and said substantially vertical support pole;
- wherein said fastener seat includes an inclined seating surface which engages a lowermost portion of said substantially vertical support pole and which allows said mass of said substantially vertical support pole to urge portions of said substantially vertical support pole into substantially fixed engagement with a portion of said inner surface of said sleeve member.
- 41. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said fastener seat includes (a) an apex portion in a distal position relative to said inner surface and (b) a plurality of downwardly sloping edges extending from said apex to said inner surface; and
- wherein, during assembly, gravity biases said substantially vertical support pole downwardly and inwardly along said plurality of downwardly sloping edges until said substantially vertical support pole contacts at least a portion of said inner surface.
- 42. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 36:
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned.
- 43. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 42:
- wherein said at least one key-feed port includes an internally threaded portion; and
- wherein said locking key includes an externally threaded portion for engaging said internally threaded portion of said at least one key-feed port.
- 44. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 43:
- wherein said locking key includes a knob portion which is utilized during installation to engage said at least one latching cavity with said locking key.
- 45. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 42:
- wherein engagement of said at least one latching cavity with said locking key restricts rotation of said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member.
- 46. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position;
- wherein said sleeve member defines an inner surface and an outer surface;
- wherein a fastener seat is secured to said inner surface of said sleeve member for engaging said support pole and fixing said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member except for rotation;
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned; and
- wherein engagement of said at least one latching cavity with said locking key limits rotation of said substantially vertical support pole relative to said base member.
- 47. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said at least one bushing is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a predetermined rotation range.
- 48. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said at least one bushing includes (a) a hub portion which includes a central bore for concentrically receiving said substantially vertical support pole, and (b) a hub pin for maintaining said hub portion in a fixed axial position relative to said substantially vertical support pole.
- 49. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein a lower portion of said hub position engages said hub pin.
- 50. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 49:
- wherein said lower portion of said hub portion includes at least one contoured portion to define a predetermined range of permissible rotation for said hub portion.
- 51. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 50:
- wherein said at least one contoured portion comprises castellation which limits rotation of said hub portion to said predefined range of permissible rotation.
- 52. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein said at least one bushing further includes (c) a bushing insert carried within said hub portion, which includes a particular contoured portion which limits rotation of said hub portion to a predefined range of permissible rotation for said hub portion.
- 53. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 52:
- wherein said contoured portion of said bushing insert slidably engages said hub pin over a predetermined region on said contoured portion of said bushing insert.
- 54. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 52:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position; and
- wherein said bushing insert is mateable to said base member to orient said modular and cooperating components in a particular position relative to said plurality of leg members.
- 55. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 54:
- wherein said base member includes a plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein said bushing insert restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 56. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein said hub pin includes an eyelet portion for receiving and securing conductors which extend between said modular and cooperating components.
- 57. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 56, further comprising:
- a sheath for enclosing said conductors which extends between said modular and cooperating components.
- 58. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein said hub portion further includes a contoured lower portion between stop members; and
- wherein said hub pin includes (a) an eyelet portion for receiving and securing conductors which extend between said modular and cooperating components, (b) a load bearing portion for engaging a lowermost portion of said hub portion and preventing downward axial displacement and (c) a range limiting portion for slidably engaging said contoured lower portion of said hub portion between said stop members to allow a predetermined range of rotational movement relative to said substantially vertical support pole.
- 59. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 58:
- wherein said hub portion includes a bushing insert which defines said contoured lower portion.
- 60. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein each of said at least one bushing further includes (c) a bushing insert which is adapted to be inserted concentrically within said hub portion in a preselected orientation.
- 61. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes a plurality of bushing station ports which extend therethrough and which define a plurality of possible axial positions for engagement of said at least one bushing.
- 62. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 61:
- wherein, during installation, said hub pin is inserted in a particular one of said plurality of bushing station ports, and said hub portion is lowered over said substantially vertical support pole into engagement with said hub pin.
- 63. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 62:
- wherein said hub portion is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range defined by interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin.
- 64. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 63:
- wherein said at least one bushing further include a bushing insert which is received by said hub portion; and
- wherein said at least one bushing is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range of rotation defined by interaction of said bushing insert and said hub pin.
- 65. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 64:
- wherein said base member includes a plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein said bushing insert restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 66. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 48:
- wherein each of said at least one bushing further includes (c) a hub pin retainer member which prevents inadvertent removal of said hub pin.
- 67. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said base member includes (a) a sleeve member, and (b) a plurality of leg members secured to said sleeve member for engaging said flooring surface and maintaining said sleeve member in a vertical position;
- wherein said substantially vertical support pole includes at least one latching cavity therein;
- wherein said sleeve member of said base member includes at least one key-feed port extending therethrough;
- said apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components further comprising:
- a locking key which passes through said at least one key-feed port and engages said at least one latching cavity, when said at least one key-feed port and said at least one latching cavity are aligned;
- wherein said at least one bushing includes (a) a hub portion which is rotatable and which includes a central bore for concentrically receiving said substantially vertical support pole, and (b) a hub pin for maintaining said hub portion in a fixed axial position relative to said substantially vertical support pole;
- wherein said hub portion is rotatable relative to said substantially vertical support pole over a range defined by interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin;
- wherein said base member includes a plurality of leg members disposed over a range of approximately 90.degree.; and
- wherein interaction of said hub portion and said hub pin restricts positioning of said at least one support surface to said range of approximately 90.degree..
- 68. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40:
- wherein said at least one support surface is pivotally coupled to said at least one support arm.
- 69. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 68:
- wherein said at least one support surface comprises a single piece of a relatively low profile but sturdy material.
- 70. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 68:
- wherein a pivotal coupling between said at least one support surface and said at least one support arm comprises:
- a coupling bore extending through said at least one support surface at a central location;
- a coupling pin extending through said coupling bore and securing said at least one support surface to said at least one support arm;
- wherein said at least one support surface is fully rotatable relative to said at least one support arm.
- 71. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 70, further comprising:
- a locking member for fixing said at least one support surface in rotational orientation relative to said at least one support arm.
- 72. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 71:
- wherein said locking member includes an internally threaded locking knob for engaging an externally threaded portion of said coupling pin.
- 73. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 68, further comprising:
- male and female mating members coupled between each of said at least one support surface and said selected one of said at least one support arm, for slightly impeding rotational movement and especially impeding vibration-induced rotational movement.
- 74. An apparatus for supporting modular and cooperating components, according to claim 40, further comprising:
- at least one leveling member coupled to said base member for positioning said base member relative to said flooring surface.
