An indicator mechanism for a ferrule swaging tool of the type having an actuator shaft that is coupled to a piston wherein said piston and shaft translate along a common axis during a swaging operation, the mechanism comprising: an indicator releasably coupled to the shaft and moveable relative thereto; said indicator shifting along said axis between a first pre-swage position and a second swaged position to provide a visual indication that a swaging operation is completed.
- 15. The mechanism of claim 14 wherein said indicator comprises a knob concentrically mounted on said shaft.
- 16. The mechanism of claim 15 wherein said knob is biased toward said second position.
- 17. The mechanism of claim 14 wherein said indicator is releasably coupled to said shaft by a detent device.
- 18. A hydraulic swaging tool for swaging ferrules onto a cylindrical member, the tool comprising: a tool housing; a piston retained in said housing; said piston translating along an axis between a pre-swage position and a swaged position; an actuator shaft coupled to said piston for axial movement therewith; said shaft comprising an inner bore for supplying fluid under pressure to a cavity between one side of said piston and said housing.
- 19. The tool of claim 18 comprising a pressure relief valve disposed in said shaft inner bore.
- 20. The tool of claim 19 wherein said valve comprises a spring biased poppet valve.
- 21. In a swaging tool of the type having a swaging die that receives a tube end onto which a ferrule is to be swaged, the improvement comprising: a device associated with the swaging die for applying a marking to the tube end coincident with completion of a swaging operation, with said marking providing a visual indication that a proper swage was completed.
- 22. The tool of claim 21 wherein said device comprises a raised portion of surface of the swaging die; said surface forming an indent in the tube end.
- 23. The tool of claim 22 wherein said device comprises a raised surface formed on a surface of the swaging die against which the tube end abuts during a swaging operation.
- 24. The tool of claim 22 wherein said raised surface comprises a bead.
- 25. A swaging die for a swaging tool used to swage ferrules onto a tube end, said die comprising a counterbore that slideably receives a tube end; and a protrusion on a surface of said counterbore that forms an indentation in the tube end coincident with a proper swaging operation.
- 26. The die of claim 25 wherein said protrusion comprises a raised bead on a surface of the counterbore that axially abuts the tube end.
- 27. A method for calibrating a ferrule swaging apparatus of the type having a piston that drives a swaging element along an axis and an indicator device that provides an indication to the operator that the piston has been axially displaced a predetermined distance, comprising the steps of:
using a first stop element to activate the indicator device in response to axial displacement of the piston from an initial pre-swage position to a swaged position; determining said axial displacement; and using a second stop element having a selected axial dimension to cause said indicator device to be activated at a predetermined axial displacement of the piston when the piston is displaced between said initial and swaged positions.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein said stop element comprises a washer that engages said indicator device upon axial displacement of the piston.
- 29. A swaging apparatus for swaging ferrules onto tube ends, the apparatus being of the type having a piston that is axially displaced to drive a swaging die wherein the swaging die moves axially relative to a sleeve that holds the ferrule and a coupling nut in place during a swaging operation, wherein different ferrule sizes may be swaged with the same piston displacement, the apparatus comprising:
the swaging die being axially dimensioned so as to engage a ferrule forward end of a first ferrule that requires a maximum axial displacement of the die during a swaging operation; the die also being dimensioned to provide a selectable gap between the die and the front end of a different sized second ferrule when said second ferrule is installed for a swaging operation; wherein said gap is predetermined based on a required axial displacement of the die to swage the second ferrule; said required axial displacement being less than said maximum axial displacement.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein said required axial displacement is less than the stroke of the piston during a swaging operation.
