Claims
- 1. An apparatus for cleaning teeth comprising:
a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially only the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate is formed of resilient material.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate is formed of chewing gum.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate further includes an antiseptic substance.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate further includes a flavoring substance.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate comprises first and second layers, and a central layer disposed between the first and second layers.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the first and second layers are formed of a resilient foam-like material.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the central layer comprises a sheet of malleable material.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising an aperture through the plate.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising a tube extending through the aperture in the plate.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plate is disposable.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising an enclosed pocket contained within the plate.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a stiffening member contained within the plate adjacent an outer periphery of the plate.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a handle attached to the plate.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a liquid mouthwash.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the liquid mouthwash further comprises at least one of detergent, solid particles, and gel particles.
- 17. A kit for cleaning teeth crevices comprising, in combination:
a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially only the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw; and a liquid mouthwash.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the liquid mouthwash further comprises at least one of detergent, solid particles, and gel particles.
- 19. A mouthpad for facilitating cleaning of crevices between adjacent teeth, the mouthpad comprising
a U-shaped plate sized and shaped to cover substantially biting surfaces of upper teeth and lower teeth of a human jaw and thereby substantially block spaces between the upper teeth and the lower teeth during occlusion, while leaving substantially unobstructed the crevices between adjacent upper teeth and the crevices between adjacent lower teeth.
- 20. A method of delivering a liquid into the mouth of a user, the method comprising:
inserting a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially only the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw into a mouth of a user; drawing an amount of liquid into the mouth; biting down on the plate; rinsing the liquid while biting down on the plate; and removing the liquid and plate from the mouth.
- 21. The method according to claim 20, wherein the liquid is drawn into the mouth through an aperture through the plate
- 22. The method according to claim 20, wherein the liquid is drawn into the mouth through a tube extending through the plate.
- 23. The method according to claim 20, wherein the plate is formed of resilient material.
- 24. The method according to claim 20, wherein biting comprises
biting down on the plate to cover substantially the biting surface of the upper teeth and the lower teeth and to substantially block spaces between the upper teeth and the lower teeth.
- 25. The method according to claim 24, wherein rinsing comprises
forcing the liquid through the crevices between adjacent teeth of the upper jaw and adjacent teeth of the lower jaw while the biting surfaces remain substantially covered by the plate.
- 26. An apparatus for orally delivering an agent comprising,
a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw; and at least one of a therapeutic agent and a cosmetic agent.
- 27. The apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the therapeutic agent is at least one of an antibiotic and a hormone.
- 28. The apparatus according to claim 27, wherein the antibiotic substance is at least one of doxycycline and monocycline.
- 29. The apparatus according to claim 27, wherein the hormone is insulin.
- 30. The apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the therapeutic agent is at least one of a small organic molecule, a chemical compound, a peptide, a protein, a nucleic acid, a polysaccharide, and a lipid.
- 31. The apparatus according to claim 30, wherein the chemical compound is one of isosorbide dinitrate, lignocaine or selegiline.
- 32. The apparatus according to claim 26, the therapeutic agent is an anesthetic drug.
- 33. The apparatus according to claim 26, further comprising a permeation enhancer for facilitating delivery of at least one of the therapeutic agent and the cosmetic agent.
- 34. The apparatus according to claim 33, wherein the permeation enhancer is at least one of bile salts, sodium glycocholate, sodium deoxycholate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium salicylate, sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and aprotinin.
- 35. The apparatus according to claim 26, further comprising a sustained time release mechanism for varying the rate of release of at least one of the therapeutic agent and the cosmetic agent.
- 36. The apparatus according to claim 35, wherein the sustained time release mechanism is a polymer microsphere.
- 37. The apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the therapeutic agent is in solid form.
- 38. The apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the therapeutic agent is in liquid form.
- 39. A kit for oral delivery of a therapeutic agent comprising, in combination:
a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw; and a therapeutic agent.
- 40. The apparatus according to claim 39, further comprising particles capable of detaching from the U-shaped plate and dissolving in a liquid.
- 41. The apparatus according to claim 39, wherein the particles contain at the therapeutic agent.
- 42. A method comprising:
inserting a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially only the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw into a mouth of a user; biting down on the plate; stimulating and accumulating saliva; rinsing the saliva repeatedly while biting down on the plate; and removing the plate from the mouth.
- 43. A method of oral transmucosal delivery of a therapeutic agent comprising:
inserting a U-shaped plate containing at least a therapeutic agent into a mouth of a user; drawing liquid into the mouth of a user; rinsing with the liquid while biting down on the plate; and removing the plate and liquid from the mouth.
- 44. The method according to claim 43, wherein the liquid includes an activator for the therapeutic agent.
- 45. A method of oral transmucosal delivery of a therapeutic agent comprising:
inserting a U-shaped plate into a mouth of a user; drawing liquid containing a therapeutic agent into the mouth of a user; rinsing with the liquid while biting down on the plate; and removing the plate and liquid from the mouth.
- 46. The method according to claim 43, further comprising repeatedly rinsing the liquid while biting down on the plate.
- 47. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the aperture is sized and shaped to facilitate the flow of a desired volume of liquid through the plate.
- 48. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the aperture may be selectively opened and closed.
- 49. The apparatus of claim 26, further comprising a lipsome to enhance uptake of the therapeutic agent into cells.
