Claims
- 1. Apparatus for boriding a workpiece of an alloy of Fe, Ni, Co or a cermet with boron trifluoride comprising a reactor received in an enclosed heating means, the reactor having a closed fluid-tight lower portion and a sealable upper portion extending partially from said heating means said reactor having a perforated workpiece grid near its base for retaining a workpiece to be borided, a container suspended in the upper portion of the reactor and having therein a first perforated holding grid and a second perforated holding grid spaced apart from and below said first perforated holding grid, a cover means hermetically sealing the reactor and the container therein, gas inlet means for introducing boron trifluoride gas extending through said cover and terminating adjacent said first perforated grid, flue means for exhausting gases from said reactor positioned adjacent said grid for holding said workpiece and extending through said cover, the gas inlet and flue means adapted to direct a gas through said cover, over said first perforated grid and said second perforated grid, downwardly over said workpiece grid then out of said reactor.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said inlet is in fluid communication with a source of boron trifluoride, said first perforated holding grid is adapted to support inorganic oxides while allowing a gas to pass through said grid, said second perforated holding grid is adapted to support particles of boron carbide while allowing a gas to pass through said grid, and said perforated workpiece grid is adapted to allow a gas to pass therethrough while a workpiece is positioned thereon.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein a thermometric probe is received in said flue means and is adjacent said perforated workpiece grid.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said heating means is adapted to heat said reactor to a temperature in the range of 850.degree. to 1000.degree. C. near the reactor opening and a temperature in the range of 850.degree. to 1100.degree. C. near the closed fluid-tight lower portion of said reactor.
