Claims
- 1. An apparatus for extruding and presenting a continuous web of thermoplastic material in a continuous mode and transfering incremental lengths thereof to an orienting and forming device and forming products in the latter in an intermittent mode downstream of and with no effect on said continuous mode, comprising:
- first means continuously extruding and presenting a web of thermoplastic material at a temperature suitable for subsequent orientation to an accumulation position;
- interface means continuously ingesting said extruded web from said extruding and presenting means and intermittently discharging predetermined throw lengths of said web;
- orientation means intermittently receiving said predetermined throw lengths of said web and continuously biaxially orienting said web over each said throw length;
- each said throw length corresponding to a given actuation cycle of said intermittent orientation means; and
- thermoformer means downstream of said orientation means and synchronized therewith to ingest such said throw length of biaxially oriented web and form products therein.
- 2. The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein said first means includes thermal stabilizing roller means transfering said web from said extruder to said accumulation position;
- wherein said orientation means includes input roller means transversely egaging said web and imparting longitudinal stretch thereto;
- said input roller means being intermittently actuated to intermittently ingest a given throw length of said web from said interface means previously and continuously supplied to the interface means by said thermal stabilizing roller means; and
- said interface means comprising an open loop of said web extending from the downstream end of said thermal stabilizing roller means to the upstream end of said input roller means and said loop assuming a sagging mode in a length substantially equal to said throw length between successive actuation cycles of said orientation means in response to the respective feed rates of said thermal stabilizing roller means and said input roller means.
- 3. The apparatus defined in claim 2, wherein said orientation means includes transverse orienting means downstream from said input roller means and output roller means downstream from said transverse orienting means;
- said output roller means discharging an oriented throw length of said web downstream thereof for each actuation cycle of said orientation means; and
- wherein said thermoformer means includes transfer means immediately proximate said output roller means and synchronized therewith to receive and ingest said oriented throw lengths of web into said thermoformer in a dimensionally and thermally stable manner.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said output roller means includes enlarged upstream roll means and relatively small downstream roll means;
- said output roll means being so dimensioned as to retain a substantially oriented throw length of web thereon between successive actuation cycles of said orientation means in a dimensionally and thermally stable state.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the orientation means cooperates with the thermoformer means so that the stress placed in the thermoplastic material by said orientation is maintained from the initiation of said orientation to the formation of the products therein.
- 6. An apparatus for continuously forming articles made of a thermoplastic material wherein a continuous extrusion system is effectively interfaced with an intermittent biaxial orientation and intermittent thermoforming system which comprises
- an extrusion means for continuously extruding a thermoplastic material in a web,
- thermal stabilizing means for receiving said web and stabilizing the temperature thereof for subsequent biaxial orientation and thermoforming,
- biaxial orientation means intermittently receiving a predetermined throw length of said web of thermoplastic material and continuously biaxially orienting said web lengths of material,
- interface means disposed between said thermal stabilizing means and said biaxial orientation means and operating between an accumulating mode whereby said web of material is permitted to accumulate into an open loop having a length substantially equal to said throw length and a non-accumulating mode whereby said web is transferred to said biaxial orientation means with substantially no sag, and
- thermoformer means containing web advance means, disposed downstream of said biaxial orientation means and synchronized therewith to intermittently receive and advance each throw length of biaxially oriented web material into said thermoformer and forming products therein, wherein each intermittent advance of the web into the thermoformer means causes the interface means to shift from the accumulation mode to a non-accumulation mode wherein no sagging exists in the web and wherein during the thermoforming cycle of the thermoformer means the interface means shifts back to the accumulation mode of forming an open loop of web material, awaiting the next intermittent advance of the web through the biaxial orientation means and the web advance means of the thermoformer means,
- whereby the biaxial orientation means and the thermoforming means cooperate so that the stress placed in the thermoplastic web material by said biaxial orientation means is maintained from the initiation of said orientation to the formation of the products in the thermoformer means.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the thermal stabilizing means comprises a plurality of cooling roller means.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the thermal stabilizing means comprises the use of a plurality of roller means sufficient to effect ambient cooling of the web to the desired orientation temperature.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the biaxial orientation means includes means for achieving both longitudinal and transverse orientation of the web.
