Claims
- 1. A continuously operating press for producing boards from feedstock the press comprising:
- a press table having a heating plate;
- a press ram having a heating plate and being movable relative to the press table to define an adjustable press gap therebetween;
- driving drums;
- idler drums;
- flexible continuous steel bands which are driven by the driving drums and guided by the idler drums around the press table and press ram, the steel bands transferring press pressure from the press table and press ram to the feedstock and drawing the feedstock in a moving direction through the press;
- roller rods having a rotational axis transverse to the moving direction of the feedstock, the roller rods supporting the flexible continuous steel bands;
- an entry adjustment device disposed adjacent the press gap and being movable to define a variable angle entry gap through which the feedstock passes such that the feedstock is subjected to compressive forces, wherein the entry adjustment device includes, first, second and third sections, the first and second sections are connected via a first flexible joint, the second and third sections are connected via a second flexible joint such that the second and third sections are articulated relative to each other, the third section is connected to at least one of the heating plates of the press table and press ram via a third flexible joint, the first, second and third sections via the respective first, second and third flexible joints being adjustable to respective angles .gamma., .beta. and .alpha. relative to a horizontal plane such that as the feedstock passes through the second and third sections it is subjected to compressive forces; and
- means for adjusting the second and third sections relative to the horizontal plane whereby the angles .gamma., .beta. and .alpha. are adjusted, the adjusting means capable of at least one of adjusting the second and third sections so that the angles .beta. and .alpha. are positive relative to the horizontal plane and adjusting the second and third sections so that the angle .beta. of the second section is positive relative to the horizontal plane and the angle .alpha. is one of negative and positive relative to the horizontal plane.
- 2. An apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein the first and second sections include a first platen and the third section includes a second platen articulatingly connected to the first platen via the second flexible joint.
- 3. A press as recited in claim 2, wherein the first, second and third sections are convexly joined by the first, second and third flexible joints.
- 4. A press as recited in claim 2, wherein a ratio of a length of the first platen to a length of the second platen is in a platen range of approximately 1:2 to 1:4.
- 5. A press as recited in claim 4, further comprising a resilient roller plate extending within the first, second and third sections, the roller plate having a Brinell hardness of about 550 and a thickness of approximately 2 to 2.5 times a thickness of the steel bands.
- 6. A press as recited in claim 2, wherein the first platen is an unheated platen and the second platen is a heated platen.
- 7. A press as recited in claim 2, wherein the first section further includes a multiple-leaf spring operatively associated with the first platen and the angles .gamma., .beta. and .alpha. represent respectively the angles that the multiple-leaf spring, the first platen and the second platen make relative to the horizontal plane, the adjusting means includes a computer and first, second and third actuators with the computer controlling the first, second and third actuators to respectively adjust the first platen, the second platen and the multiple-leaf spring relative to the horizontal plane.
- 8. A press as recited in claim 7, further comprising a detector for detecting a thickness of the feedstock and wherein the computer controls the first, second and third actuators based on the detected thickness such that an initial concurrent contact of the feedstock with each of the steel belts occurs at a start of the second section.
- 9. A press as recited in claim 8, further comprising a gear box for the roller rods, the gear box including an equalizing beam in contact with the multiple-leaf spring and wherein a wedge-shaped gap is defined in the first platen and the third actuator is connected to the gear box so that a setting force of the third actuator is transmitted through the equalizing beam to the multiple-leaf spring whereby the multiple-leaf spring elastically moves in the wedge-shaped gap in response to changes in the angles .alpha. and .beta. so that an entry tangent line .beta. automatically adapts to the changes in the angles .alpha. and .beta..
- 10. A press as recited in claim 2, further comprising a second entry adjustment device substantially the same as the entry adjustment device, the entry adjustment device and the second entry adjustment device operatively connected to the heating plate of the press ram and the heating plate of the press table, respectively.
- 11. A press as recited in claim 2, wherein a length of the third section is in a third section range of about 300 mm to 600 mm.
