Claims
- 1. An apparatus for the production of carbon black comprising, in combination, means defining a combustion chamber for the combustion of a fuel gas with an oxygen containing gas, said combustion chamber having a central axis, first conduit means for introducing fuel gas radially from a hollow shell into said combustion chamber with said conduit means extending along said central axis, second conduit for introducing an oxygen containing gas tangentially into said combustion chamber, means defining a mixing chamber connected to said combustion chamber and greatly constricted compared to said combustion chamber, means defining a reaction chamber connected to said mixing chamber, said reaction chamber being enlarged compared to said mixing chamber, each of said chambers being aligned along a common middle axis, a carbon black forming material atomizing apparatus including a cylindrical conduit having outlet means for directing the carbon black forming material radially from within outwardly of said conduit, said cylindrical conduit having a first portion having a selected cross-sectional area and a second portion downstream of said first portion having a cross-sectional area that is less than said cross-sectional area of said first portion, said atomizing apparatus being positioned within the mixing chambers so as to define an annular channel between the exterior of said conduit along said first portion and the wall of said mixing chamber, said mixing chamber having said second portion of said conduit disposed therein along the remaining length of said mixing chamber with said remaining length of said mixing chamber having a greater cross-sectional area than said annular channel, said outlet means of said atomizing apparatus including a set of nozzles on one of said portions of said conduit with the nozzles of said set spaced around the exterior of said conduit, the dimensions of said annular channel being such that the velocity of the combustion gases will reach approximately 400 meters per second, the transition from said combustion chamber to said mixing chamber being stepwise in cross-section.
- 2. An apparatus for the production of carbon black comprising, in combination, means defining a combustion chamber for the combustion of a fuel gas with an oxygen containing gas, said combustion chamber having a central axis, first conduit means disposed along said central axis for introducing fuel gas radially from a hollow shell into said combustion chamber, second conduit means for introducing oxygen containing gas tangentially into said combustion chamber, means defining a mixing chamber connected to said combustion chamber wherein the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber inlet to the mixing chamber inlet is at least 7:1, means defining a reaction chamber connected to said mixing chamber, wherein the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the reaction chamber to the mixing chamber outlet is between 4:1 and 10:1, each of said chambers being aligned along a common middle axis, a carbon black forming material atomizing apparatus including a cylindrical conduit and outlet means spaced from the end of said conduit for directing the carbon black forming material radially from within outwardly of said conduit, said atomizing apparatus being positioned within the mixing chamber so as to define an annular channel between said conduit and the wall of said mixing chamber over the entire length of said mixing chamber, the dimensions thereof being such that the velocity of the combustion gases will reach approximately 400 meters per second, the transition from said combustion chamber to said mixing chamber being stepwise in cross-section.
- 3. An apparatus for the production of carbon black comprising, in combination, means defining a combustion chamber for the combustion of a fuel gas with an oxygen containing gas, said combustion chamber having a central axis, first conduit means disposed along said central axis for introducing fuel gas radially from a hollow shell into said combustion chamber, second conduit means for introducing an oxygen containing gas tangentially into said combustion chamber, means defining a mixing chamber connected to said combustion chamber and greatly constricted compared to said combustion chamber, means defining a reaction chamber connected to said mixing chamber, said reaction chamber being enlarged compared to said mixing chamber, each of said chambers being aligned along a common middle axis, a carbon black forming material atomizing apparatus including a cylindrical conduit and outlet means for directing the carbon black forming material radially from within outwardly of said conduit, said outlet means being spaced from the end of said conduit, said atomizing apparatus being positioned within said mixing chamber so as to define an annular channel between the exterior of said conduit and the wall of said mixing chamber over the entire length of said mixing chamber, said mixing chamber having an upstream portion adjacent said combustion chamber and a downstream portion adjacent said reaction chamber with its downstream portion being of larger cross-sectional area than said upstream portion, said outlet means of said atomizing apparatus being located in the upstream portion of said mixing chamber, the dimensions of said annular channel being such that the velocity of the combustion gases will reach approximately 400 meters per second, the transition from said combustion chamber to said mixing chamber being stepwise in cross-section.
- 4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 3 wherein the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber inlet to the mixing chamber inlet is at least 7:1.
- 5. The apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 or 3 wherein said mixing chamber has an outlet and the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the reaction chamber to said mixing chamber outlet is between 4:1 and 10:1.
