Claims
- 1. A continuous method for the production of carbon fibrils in a fluid reaction zone comprising the steps of:(a) introducing a suitable gaseous fibril precursor into a lower part of a vertical fluid bed reactor; (b) reacting said precursor in said fluid bed in the presence of finely divided particles of a catalyst for converting said precursor to fibrils without the coproduction of a thermal carbon overcoat under fibril-forming reaction-conditions; and (c) removing fibrils from said reactor at an effluent port located in a lower part of said vertical reactor.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said suitable gaseous fibril precursor is a mixture of hydrocarbons.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said suitable gaseous fibril precursor is selected from the group consisting of methane, ethane, propane, butane, benzene, cyclohexane, butene, isobutene, ethylene, propylene, acetylene, toluene, xylene, cumene, ethyl benzene, napththalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, methanol, ethanol, carbon monoxide and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said fibril-forming reaction-conditions include a temperature from about 500 to 1500° C.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said fibril-forming reaction-conditions include a temperature from about 600 to 900° C.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said finely divided particles of a catalyst comprise at least one metal selected from the group consisting of transition metals, lanthanides and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein said transition metals are selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium, vanadium, chromium or mixtures thereof.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said finely divided particles have an average size less than about 400 microns.
- 9. The method according to claim 1, wherein said finely divided particles have an average size of about 50 to 300 microns.
- 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein said finely divided particles have an average size less than about 1 micron.
- 11. A reaction apparatus for the continuous production of carbon fibrils from a gaseous fibril precursor without the coproduction of a thermal carbon overcoat comprising:(a) a vertical reaction zone containing fluidizable, finely divided particles of a catalyst for converting said precursor to carbon fibrils; (b) a port for introducing said gaseous precursor into a lower part of said vertical reaction zone; (c) means for causing said gaseous precursor to flow upwardly in said vertical reaction zone and fluidize said finely divided particles of catalyst; (d) means for maintaining fibril-forming reaction conditions within said vertical reaction zone; and (e) an effluent port for removing fibrils from a lower part of said vertical reaction zone.
- 12. The reaction apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the carbon fibrils have a morphology comprising vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters.
- 13. The reaction apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said finely divided particles of a catalyst comprise at least one metal selected from the group consisting of transition metals, lanthanides and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The reaction apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said transition metals are selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium, vanadium, chromium or mixtures thereof.
- 15. The reaction apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said finely divided particles have an average size less than about 400 microns.
- 16. The reaction apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said finely-divided particles have an average size of about 50 to 300 microns.
- 17. The reaction apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said finely divided particles have an average size less than about 1 micron.
- 18. The method according to claim 8, wherein said finely divided particles comprise at least one multivalent transition metal on a particulate substrate.
- 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein said metal is present on said substrate as a multiplicity of discontinuous catalytic sites.
- 20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said multiplity of discontinuous catalytic sites have a size of about 35 to 700 Å at least during fibril formation, which size is measured by measuring the size of the transition metal particles recovered along with produced fibrils.
- 21. The method of claim 18, wherein said transition metal is iron mixed with at least one other transition metal.
- 22. The method according to claim 18, wherein said transition metal is present in an amount less than about 25 weight percent.
- 23. The method according to claim 11, wherein the carbon fibrils have a morphology comprising vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and have graphitic layers.
- 24. The method according to claim 1, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters.
- 25. The method according to claim 1, wherein said fibrils comprise an inner core region of less ordered carbon atoms surrounded by an outer region of ordered carbon atoms.
- 26. The method according to claim 1, wherein said fibrils have diameters less than about 70 nanometers.
- 27. The method according to claim 1, wherein said fibrils have a length to diameter ratio greater than about 100.
- 28. The reaction apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said finely divided particles comprise at least one multivalent transition metal on a particulate substrate.
- 29. The reaction apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said metal is present on said substrate as a multiplicity of discontinuous catalytic sites.
- 30. The reaction apparatus according to claim 29, wherein said multiplity of discontinuous catalytic sites have a size of about 35 to 700 Å at least during fibril formation, which size is measured by measuring the size of the transition metal particles recovered along with produced fibrils.
- 31. The reaction apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said transition metal is iron mixed with at least one other transition metal.
- 32. The reaction apparatus according to claim 31, wherein said transition metals are present in an amount less than about 25 weight percent.
