- 5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said burner nozzle includes a central axial gaseous fuel passage opening to a divergent nozzle face, said oxidizing gas passages opening to said divergent nozzle face and surrounding said central passage.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said oxidizing gas passages extend at about 30.degree. to the axis of said chamber.
- 7. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein said self-contained configuration is in the form of a torroidal vortex.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said fuel means is arranged to introduce said secondary fuel adjacent to the wall of the chamber and tangential to the chamber, so that the secondary fuel forms a sheath around the products of combustion of said mixture, which sheath is in direct physical contact with said products.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said combustion chamber is cylindrical, and said burner means causes the mixture to assume a swirling condition within said chamber, the swirl number of said swirling mixture being greater than about 0.5 but not so great that a wall jet develops at the wall of the combustion chamber, and said fuel means for introducing said secondary fuel is located tangential to said chamber.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said burner nozzle includes a central axial passage means for introducing a slurry of particulate fuel into said combustion chamber, and a plurality of axial gaseous fuel passages in spaced circumferential relationship surrounding said central passage, said oxidizing gas passages being spaced from and surrounding said gaseous fuel passage, and said fuel means for introducing said secondary fuel is located tangential to said chamber.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said oblique passages extend at an angle of about 47.degree. to the axis of said chamber.
- 12. An apparatus for the production of gaseous mixtures containing substantial amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen comprising
- a combustion chamber means,
- burner means for blending together an oxidizing gas and a primary fuel to produce a compressible gas-like mixture and cause the mixture to assume a swirling condition within said chamber means, the swirl number of said swirling mixture being greater than about 0.5 but not so great that a wall jet develops at the wall of the combustion chamber means, to cause the mixture to assume a highly turbulent compact and self-contained configuration while being totally combusted in said chamber means to produce products of combustion, and
- fuel means for introducing a secondary fuel into said chamber means adjacent the wall of said chamber closely adjacent the burner means and in the form of a sheath in contact with the surface of said self-contained configuration for mixing and reacting with said products of combustion to produce a gaseous mixture containing substantial amounts of CO and H.sub.2, said combustion chamber means, said burner means and said fuel means cooperating to permit said self-contained configuration to maintain its identity without the necessity for a baffle to separate same from said secondary fuel.
- 13. An apparatus for the production of gaseous mixtures containing substantial amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen comprising
- a combustion chamber means,
- burner means including a plurality of circumferentially spaced angled or oblique passages for blending together an oxidizing gas and a primary fuel to produce a compressible gas-like mixture and cause the mixture to assume a swirling condition within said chamber means, the swirl number of said swirling mixture being greater than about 0.5 but no so great that a wall jet develops at the wall of the combustion chamber means, to cause the mixture to assume a highly turbulent compact and self-contained configuration while being totally combusted in said chamber means to produce gaseous products of combustion, and
- fuel means for introducing a secondary fuel into said chamber means adjacent the wall of said chamber closely adjacent the burner means and in surrounding contact with the surface of said self-contained configuration for mixing and reacting with said products of combustion to produce a gaseous mixture containing substantial amounts of CO and H.sub.2.
