Claims
- 1. Apparatus for producing liquid iron from iron oxide, comprising at least one reduction column for the iron oxide in which the oxide is reduced by gas passed through it, a melt vessel or melting of the reduced sponge iron from the reduction column which vessel is located lower than and in open communication with the reduction column, first feed means for delivering oxygen into the melt vessel above the level of the liquid iron bath in the melt vessel during operation, second feed means separate from said first feed means to deliver coal powder into the melt vessel above the level of the liquid iron bath during operation, and stirring means for maintaining said liquid iron bath at least partly in motion during operation.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein at least one of said first and second feed means is adjustable so as to vary the location and/or direction of delivery of at least one of the oxygen and the coal powder.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein both said feed means are adjustable.
- 4. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said stirring means are adjustable so as to vary the amount of stirring of the iron bath.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a plurality of oxygen lances supplying said oxygen-containing gas also at least partly constitute said stirring means, being arranged to direct their oxygen jets obliquely onto the surface of the bath to cause circulation of the bath.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein there are three of said oxygen lances each arranged to direct its jet onto the bath with a component of motion which is tangential with respect to a central point of the bath.
- 7. Apparatus according to any one of claims 5 and 6 wherein each said lance is adjustable so as to vary the direction and height of the oxygen jet.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the reduction column has a bounding wall and a cooled bottom element which forms a support for the filling of the column and which is spaced from the bounding wall of the reduction column by a slot for passage of the reduced iron towards the melt vessel, the periphery of the support element adjacent said slot corresponding in location approximately to the foot of the natural slope of the filling of the column, and including pushing means for causing material of the filling to fall through the slot past the support element.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the support element has a substantially flat upper surface and has side walls which give it a tapering shape downwardly from the upper surface whereby a converging annular duct extends downwardly from said slot around the support element, which duct discharges into the melt vessel.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein at least one wall of said annular duct comprises heat-exchange pipes forming part of a steam-generating plant.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1, including means for removing the gas from the top of the reduction column, separating means for at least partly removing carbon dioxide from the gas so removed from the reduction column and means for feeding the gas treated by the separating means into the reducing gas passing from the melt vessel into the reduction column.
