Claims
- 1. A transplanter comprising:
- a plant tray having a plurality of cells for containing plugs of growing medium with plants extending therefrom, said cells each having a drain hole and said cells being arranged in a plurality of longitudinal rows, with said rows separated by longitudinally extending indexing grooves on a bottom surface of said tray;
- a loading frame having a back side and a front side for slidably supporting said plant tray for movement relative to said loading frame;
- a plurality of indexing rods arranged in spaced, parallel relationship around the circumference of a circle to form an indexing drum having an interior cavity and a central axis, with said indexing drum being positioned relative to said loading frame to allow engagement of said indexing rods with said indexing grooves; and
- a plug ejection mechanism positioned in the interior cavity of said indexing drum for effecting the ejection of plugs from said plant tray that are in a longitudinal row in said plant tray in a plug ejection position; and
- means for intermittently rotating said indexing drum about its central axis for positively positioning successive longitudinal rows of cells in successive plug ejection positions.
- 2. The transplanter of claim 1 further including a plurality of down loader rods arranged in spaced, parallel relationship around the circumference of a circle to form a down loader drum having a central axis in a position vertically above said indexing drum so that said down loader rods are engageable with said indexing grooves; and
- means for intermittently rotating said down loader drum so as to drive said plant tray downwardly towards said indexing drum by engagement of successive down loader rods with said indexing grooves.
- 3. The transplanter of claim 2 wherein said indexing drum includes a circular end ring connected at each end of said indexing rods and a circular mid ring connected at the midpoint of said indexing rods and said end rings and mid ring being perpendicular to said indexing rods and concentric to the central axis of said indexing drum;
- said plant tray having an alignment groove in the bottom surface, with said alignment groove being perpendicular to said indexing grooves and having a profile configured to mate with an outer circumference of said circular mid ring, thereby providing means for positioning said plant tray relative to said indexing drum and said plug ejection mechanism.
- 4. The transplanter of claim 3 wherein said plug ejection mechanism comprises a plurality of plug ejecting pins, a pin mounting beam supporting said pins in a row in said interior cavity of the indexing drum and with said pins each being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the distance between the drain holes in said cells and power actuated means for unitarily moving said pins toward a longitudinal row of cells in said plug ejection position for ejecting plugs from said row.
- 5. A transplanter for positioning plant trays having drive member receiving means in successive positions for simultaneous ejection of a row of plant seedlings contained within said plant trays and ejecting said seedlings, said transplanter comprising:
- a loading frame for supporting a plurality of vertically stacked plant trays including an upper plant tray adjacently above a lowermost plant tray with said seedlings being oriented in vertically spaced horizontal rows of said plant trays;
- a plurality of plant tray drive members;
- means mounting said plant tray drive members for movement relative to said loading frame;
- means moving said plant tray drive members into engagement with said drive member receiving means for moving said plant trays in an infeed direction having a vertical component;
- means for serially ejecting rows of seedlings row by row from the vertically spaced horizontal rows of the lowermost plant tray with said means for ejecting being mounted in a lower drive member engaged with and adjacent said lowermost plant tray for movement relative to said lower drive member for ejecting a row of seedlings from said lowermost plant tray; and
- means for clamping the upper plant tray positioned adjacently above the lowermost plant tray in a fixed position relative to said loading frame while the lowermost plant tray is being moved in said infeed direction by one of said plant tray drive members.
- 6. The transplanter as recited in claim 5 wherein said drive members are provided on a hollow indexing drum and said means for ejecting seedlings is mounted internally of said hollow indexing drum.
