Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming successively formed plastic articles, comprising:
- at least first and second molding stations which are spaced generally along a first axis;
- a pair of generally parallel clamping plates extending from the first to the second molding station and spaced on opposed sides of those stations, each plate including a guide surface;
- a mold section mounted on the guide surface on each clamping plate such that the molding sections can move between the first and second molding stations;
- reciprocal means for moving the molding sections between the first and second molding stations;
- means for displacing the clamping plates toward and away from each other, so that the clamping plates can selectively open, close or clamp the molding sections; and
- biasing means mounted between the mold sections and the clamping plates, so that the clamping plates may be moved sufficiently close together to close the mold sections under the biasing force of the biasing means, yet such that the mold sections may be moved from one molding station to the other while under the biasing force, whereupon the clamping plates may be placed under greater closing pressure at one or more molding stations to clamp and seal the mold sections.
- 2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, further including four spaced tie rods on which the clamping plates are mounted in order to distribute the clamping forces.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the movable support plates each support a plurality of mold sections at least a portion of which are blow mold sections.
- 4. An apparatus for transferring articles to be molded in a sealed cavity, comprising:
- opposed clamping means mounted for axial movement toward and away from each other along a first axis;
- a mold section carried by each clamping means and mounted for movement relative to the clamping means along a second axis which is essentially perpendicular to said first axis;
- reciprocal means for transporting the mold sections along said second axis in sequence to a first station and then to a second station, said means transporting the mold sections from the first station to the second station in at least a substantially closed condition and transporting the mold sections from the second station to the first station in an open condition;
- a power source which is fixed relative to the movement of the mold sections along said second axis;
- said mold sections being movable with the clamping means along said first axis while the molds are at the first station to at least substantially close the molds around a blank sufficiently to encapsulate the blank in an interior cavity formed by the mold sections;
- said clamping means and said mold sections being actuatable by said power source while the molds sections are at said second station to assure an appropriate seal for a molding operation after the transporting means has transferred the molds in the at least substantially closed position from the first station to the second station, and
- said mold sections being openable by said power source at said second station along a third axis which is generally parallel to said first axis, in preparation for the movement of the mold sections back to said first station.
- 5. An apparatus for forming a thermoplastic article, comprising:
- (a) means for extruding a parison of thermoplastic material at a first station;
- (b) opposed clamping means mounted for axial movement toward and away from each other along a first axis;
- (c) a mold section carried by each clamping means and mounted for movement relative to the clamping means along a second axis which is essentially perpendicular to said first axis;
- (d) reciprocal means for transporting the mold sections along said second axis between first and second stations, said means transporting the mold sections from the first station to the second station in at least a substantially closed condition and transporting the mold sections from the second station to the first station in an open condition;
- (e) a power source which is fixed relative to the movement of the mold sections along said second axis;
- (i) the mold sections being movable by said power source with the clamping means to at least substantially close around a parison at the first station by movement along said first axis;
- (ii) the mold sections being actuatable with said clamping means by the power source at the second station to hold the mold sections closed for a molding operation, after the transporting means has transferred the molds in the at least substantially closed position from the first station to the second station, and
- (iii) said mold sections being openable with the clamping means at the second station in preparation for the movement of mold sections back to the first station.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 and further including:
- a core pin at said second station for insertion into the open end of the parison to form a preform.
