Claims
- 1. An apparatus for introducing one or more particles into at least one cell which comprises said one or more particles associated with means to accelerate said one or more particles to thereby cause said one or more particles to penetrate the at least one cell and whereby at least a portion of said one or more particles becomes incorporated into the interior of the at least one cell, wherein said one or more particles comprise biological substances and have a diameter sufficiently small to penetrate the at least one cell without killing the at least one cell.
- 2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 further comprising means associated with said means to accelerate in order to direct the accelerated one or more particles toward the at least one cell.
- 3. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said means to accelerate comprises discharge means having a periphery and a solid substrate carrying said one or more particles, wherein said discharge means imparts momentum to said solid substrate carrying said one or more particles which in turn accelerates said one or more particles.
- 4. An apparatus as in claim 3, wherein said solid substrate comprises a macroprojectile carrying said one or more particles, and said apparatus further comprises a macroprojectile stopping means, located contiguous the periphery, to stop said macroprojectile while allowing said one or more particles to continue toward the at least one cell.
- 5. An apparatus as in claim 3, further comprising a substrate stopping means located contiguous the periphery, to stop said substrate carrying said one or more particles while allowing said one or more particles to continue toward the at least one cell.
- 6. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said means to accelerate comprises mechanical impulse means.
