Claims
- 1. An apparatus for unfolding a mailpiece, said mailpiece having opposing sides, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of opposed receiving walls each having a receiving surface for receiving a folded mailpiece therebetween, the receiving walls each pivotally mounted on an axis for movement relative to each other; and
- a pair of opposed spreader walls adapted to be positioned between the opposing sides of the folded mailpiece for spreading the opposed sides of the folded mailpiece received between said receiving walls, the spreader walls pivotally mounted for movement relative to each other about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of each receiving wall between the receiving surfaces.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a ram for moving the spreader walls into the interior of the mailpiece.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a ram guide for controlling lateral movement of the ram.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a stop for retaining a mailpiece inserted between said receiving walls.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 including means for pivotably mounting each said receiving wall for movement through a predetermined arc.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said predetermined arc is about 90.degree..
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 including means for pivotably mounting each said spreader wall for movement through a predetermined arc.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said predetermined arc is bout 90.degree..
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising at least one receiving wall cylinder for pivotally moving said receiving walls, the receiving wall cylinder being coupled to one of said receiving walls for pivotal movement of said receiving wall.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising at least one spreader wall cylinder for pivotally moving said spreader walls, the spreader wall cylinder being coupled to one of said spreader walls for pivotal movement of said spreader wall.
- 11. An apparatus for unfolding a mailpiece, said mailpiece having opposing sides, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of opposed receiving walls each having a receiving surface for receiving a folded mailpiece therebetween, said receiving walls each including an upper and lower edge, the receiving walls each pivotally mounted on an axis for movement relative to each other;
- at least one receiving wall cylinder for moving said receiving walls relative to each other, the receiving wall cylinder coupled to one of said receiving walls;
- a pair of opposed spreader walls adapted to be positioned between the opposing sides of the folded mailpiece for spreading the folded mailpiece received between said receiving walls, said spreader walls pivotally mounted for movement relative to each other about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of each receiving wall between the receiving surfaces;
- at least one spreader wall cylinder for pivoting said spreader walls relative to each other, the spreader wall cylinder coupled to at least one spreader walls; and
- a ram for positioning said spreader walls between the receiving surfaces of said receiving walls.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising a ram guide for controlling lateral movement of the ram.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising a stop for retaining a mailpiece inserted between said receiving walls.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11 including means for pivotably mounting the lower edge of each said receiving wall to enable movement of the upper edge of said receiving wall through a predetermined arc.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said predetermined arc is about 90.degree..
- 16. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the height of said receiving walls is less than one-half of the length of the mailpiece to be unfolded.
- 17. An apparatus for unfolding a mailpiece, said mailpiece having opposing sides, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of opposed receiving walls each having a receiving surface for receiving a folded mailpiece therebetween, said receiving walls each comprising an upper and lower edge, each of said receiving walls pivotally mounted on an axis along the lower edge for movement of the upper edge of each receiving wall through a predetermined arc;
- at least one receiving wall cylinder for pivotal movement of said receiving walls relative to each other;
- pair of opposed spreader walls to be positioned between the opposing sides of the folded mailpiece for spreading the folded mailpiece received between said receiving walls, said spreader walls each comprising an upper and lower edge, each of said spreader walls pivotally mounted for movement relative to each other about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of each receiving wall between the receiving surfaces; and
- a ram for positioning said spreader walls between receiving surfaces of said receiving walls.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising a stop for retaining a mailpiece inserted between said receiving walls.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising a ram guide for controlling lateral movement of said ram.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising a pair of receiving wall cylinders for pivotally moving said receiving walls, and a pair of spreader wall cylinders for pivotally moving said spreader walls.
