Claims
- 1. Apparatus for use in a process for making a product from wet or tacky fibers wherein the fibers are entrained in a moving gaseous stream and are carried through a forming chamber, in a direction and at a velocity, said forming chamber having at least one confining wall, and onto a permeable collection surface where the fibers build up on said collection surface to form said product while said gaseous stream passes through said permeable collection surface, said apparatus comprising a forming chamber having at least one confining wall, said forming chamber being near said permeable collection surface, the improvement comprising openings and ramps in at least a portion of said at least one confining wall for directing a gas in approximately a same direction as the direction of said gaseous stream, each opening being adjacent to one of the ramps, each of said ramps ending at a surface of said at least one confining wall that is exposed to said moving gaseous stream containing said fibers and each of said ramps making an angle with said surface of less than 45 degrees, and a source of said gas for passing said gas through said openings and up said ramps to form a gaseous layer moving in the same general direction of said gaseous stream to prevent at least most of said fibers from contacting said surface of at least said portion of said at least one confining wall.
- 2. Apparatus for confining a gaseous stream having particles, fibers or both entrained therein and moving at a velocity and in a direction, comprising a chamber having at least one confining wall, at least a portion of said at least one confining wall having openings therein for directing a gas through each of said openings in approximately a same direction as the direction of said gaseous stream and a depression adjacent to each of said openings, said depression being in a form of a ramp extending from each of said openings to a surface of said at least one confining wall exposed to said gaseous stream, said ramp making an angle with said surface of less than 45 degrees for directing a gas passing through said openings into the chamber to form a gaseous layer moving in a same general direction as said gaseous stream and at a higher velocity than the velocity of said gaseous stream to prevent at least most of said particles, fibers or both from contacting and building up on said surface.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each ramp begins at an edge of said opening which is behind said exposed surface of said confining wall, the angle the ramp makes with said exposed surface being between about 22 and 45 degrees.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said at least a portion of said one confining wall containing said openings also contains a hole located near the end of at each of least some of said ramps for also introducing a flow of said gas in a direction generally perpendicular to said exposed surface, said end being at said exposed surface.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said at least one confining wall having openings therein comprises one or more sidewalls of a forming chamber.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said at least one confining wall containing said openings therein is comprised of a plurality of plenum boxes joined together with seams between said plenum boxes, all of said seams being not generally parallel with the direction of flow of the entraining gaseous stream.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said at least a portion of said confining wall also contains holes, each hole located near an end of at least some of the ramps, which end is located at the exposed surface of said confining wall, for introducing a flow of high velocity gas in a direction generally perpendicular to said exposed surface.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said assembly for maintaining said layer comprises a plurality of plenum boxes joined together to form said at least one confining wall, said at least one confining wall including sidewalls and a bottom wall of said forming chamber, there being seams between edges of the joined plenum boxes, all of said seams being not generally parallel with an intended direction of flow of said entraining gaseous stream through said forming chamber.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said assembly for maintaining said layer further comprises a plurality of plenum boxes joined together to form said at least one confining wall, the latter being sidewalls of said forming chamber, there being seams between the edges of adjoining plenum boxes, all of said seams being not generally parallel with an intended direction of flow of said entraining gaseous stream through said forming chamber.
- 10. Apparatus for collecting wet or tacky particles, fibers or both comprising means for providing a gaseous stream having a direction of flow and a velocity high enough to entrain wet or tacky particles, fibers or both, a forming chamber having at least one confining wall and a permeable collection surface for collecting said wet or tacky particles, fibers or both when the entraining gaseous stream is pulled through said permeable surface to form a mat or blanket of the particles, fibers or both, the improvement comprising an assembly for cooperating with a fan to maintain a layer of gas adjacent a surface of at least a portion of said at least one confining walls, said layer of gas moving in a same general direction of movement of said gaseous stream, said surface being exposed to said entraining gaseous stream, the velocity of said layer of gas adjacent said surface of said at least a portion of said at least one confining wall being greater than the velocity of said gaseous stream within about an inch of said surface to prevent at least most of said wet or tacky particles, fibers or both from contacting and building up on said surface, said assembly including a plurality of openings in said at least one confining wall for directing the gas in approximately a same direction, each opening being adjacent a depression in a form of a ramp extending from the opening to said surface, wherein said ramp makes an angle with said surface of less than 45 degrees.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said assembly comprises a plurality of gas directing openings in said at least a portion of said at least one confining wall.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said assembly for maintaining said layer comprises a plurality of plenum boxes joined together to form said at least one confining wall, said at least one confining wall including sidewalls and a bottom wall of said forming chamber, there being seams between edges of the joined plenum boxes, all of said seams being not generally parallel with an intended direction of flow of said entraining gaseous stream through said forming chamber.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said assembly for maintaining said layer comprises a plurality of plenum boxes joined together to form said at least one confining wall, said at least one confining wall including sidewalls of said forming chamber, there being seams between edges of the joined plenum boxes, all of said seams being not generally parallel with an intended direction of flow of said entraining gaseous stream through said forming chamber.
- 14. Apparatus for forming at least a portion of a sidewall or bottom of a chamber for confining a gaseous stream having wet or tacky particles, fibers or both entrained therein, said gaseous stream having a velocity and a direction of flow through said chamber, comprising:
- a) a source of gas,
- b) a gas manifold communicating with said source of gas, and
- c) a plurality of adjoining plenum boxes with seams therebetween, wherein none of said seams are parallel with the direction of flow of said gaseous stream, wherein each plenum box has a wall with a common outer surface that is to be exposed to said gaseous stream, wherein said wall has a plurality of openings therein and a ramp adjoining each opening for directing said gas into said chamber in a same general direction as the direction of said gaseous stream, each ramp beginning at an edge of one of said openings and being behind said outer surface that is to be exposed, each said ramp making an angle with said outer surface that is to be exposed of less than 45 degrees, and wherein each plenum box communicates with said manifold.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said wall also contains holes, each hole being located near an end of one of at least some of said ramps.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said angle is between 22 and 45 degrees.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein said plurality of said plenum boxes form at least a portion of a sidewall of said chamber.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein said plurality of said plenum boxes form at least a portion of a bottom of said chamber.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein each plenum box communicates with said manifold through an adjustable valve.
