Claims
- 1. Apparatus for thermally bonding an elongate reinforcing strip of flexible material to an envelope of flexible plastic material in overlying relationship with a previously formed first peripheral seam of said envelope to form a reinforced peripheral seam, said apparatus comprising a frame, a first stationary head assembly, said frame including a stationary frame member mounting said stationary head assembly and adapted to extend through a slit in said envelope spaced from said first seam for supporting said first head assembly within the interior of the envelope, a second head assembly, said frame including a moveable frame section supporting said second head assembly for movement between an operative position closely adjacent said first head assembly and an inoperative position spaced from said first head assembly to accommodate placement and removal of the envelope on said first head, cooperating opposed drive roll means on said first and second head assemblies operable when said secnd head assembly is in said operative position to grippingly engage the envelope received on said first head assembly and to feed the envelope between said head assemblies longitudinally along said first seam, reel means mounted on said frame supporting a supply of said strip, said drive roll means being operable when said second head assembly is in said operative position to withdraw said strip from said reel means and press said strip against the envelope in overlying relationship to said first seam as the envelope is fed between said head assemblies, and a heat gun mounted in said second head assembly for directing a blast of hot air against said envelope at a point immediately preceding the contact between said strip and the envelope for maintaining a predetermined temperature in the region where the envelope and strip move into contact with each other sufficient to cause said strip to be thermally bonded to the envelope as said strip is pressed against the envelope by said drive roll means.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 further comprising means in said first head assembly for directing an air blast upwardly onto the underside of the sheet of said envelope being heated sufficient to counteract the aerodynamic force exerted on said envelope sheet by the hot air discharged from said heat gun.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 further comprising first link means mounting said heat gun means in said second head assembly for movement about a horizontal axis, and second link means operable when said second head assembly is moved away from said operative position to swing said heat gun means about said axis to direct the hot air discharged from saaid gun means upwardly away from said first head assembly.
- 4. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said frame further includes conveyor means adapted to move said envelope in a direction opposite to the movement applied to said envelope by said first and second head assemblies thereby to facilitate application of said strip circumferentially through the envelope.
- 5. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said envelope comprises a pair of sheets bonded in face to face relationship with each other along their peripheral edges by said first peripheral seam whereby said first seam projects outwardly from the surface of said envelope when said envelope is spread open on opposite sides of said seam, said apparatus further comprising a pair of opposed guide rollers on said second head operable when said second head is in said operative position to engage opposite sides of said first seam to maintain said first seam in alignment with said strip as said envelope and strip are fed through said drive roll means.
- 6. Apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said drive roll means comprises a first roll in said first head assembly, a second roll in said second head assembly, said first and second rolls being rotated in opposite directions to feed the envelope and strip through the nip of said first and second rolls while pressing said strip against said envelope, said first and second rolls each having a centrally located circumferentially extending recess therein to prevent compressing of said first seam during its passage through said rolls.
- 7. Apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein said first roll comprises helical gear sections located on opposite sides of said central recess.
- 8. Apparatus as defined in claim 7 wherein said first roll further comprises a cylindrical flange at each opposite axial end of said roll concentric with and speced axially outwardly from the adjacent helical gear section and having a diameter equal to the major diameter of the helical gear section.
