Claims
- 1. An apparatus for winding coils of wire on a core of an armature, said core having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire comprising:
- means for holding the armature in a predetermined position, housing means located adjacent opposite sides of the armature when the armature is held by the means for holding the armature, first annular means rotatably mounted on the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core adjacent one side of the core, second annular means rotatably mounted on the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core adjacent the side opposite the one side of the core, said first and second annular means each having means for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire adjacent the core so that the wire can be wound on the core, drive means to rotate the first annular means in a first circumferential direction and to rotate the second annular means in the opposite circumferential direction, first means for guiding the wire moving from the first annular means into a first pair of slots in the core to form a first coil on the core, and second means to guide the wire moving from the second annular means into a second pair of slots in the core to form a second coil on the core.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said first annular means and said second annular means each comprises a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein: the circular sleeve has a diameter larger than said first means and second means for guiding the wire.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: the first means is mounted on the first annular means with bearing means whereby the first annular means can rotate relative to the first means, and the second means is mounted on the second annular means with bearing means whereby the second annular means can rotate rleative to the second means.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: the first means and the second means each have a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 including: means for moving the first means and the second means relative to each other whereby said first means and second means can be located in operative relation with opposite portions of the core.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: the first means and second means each have a first pocket to accommodate portions of the core and a surface for guiding wire into pairs of slots in the core.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 including: movable tabs on the first means and second means for guiding wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to positions whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said first annular means and the second annular means and a drive gear means engageable with each of said driven gear means.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein: said driven gear means are bevel gears, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means operably connected to said first and second annular means, drive gear means engageable with said driven gear means, and motor means for rotating said drive gear means.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to said first annular means, a second pulley connected to said second annular means and an endless belt means driveably connecting said first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein: said first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperates with the teeth of said first pulley and second pulley.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein: said first pulley is part of said first annular means and said second pulley is part of said second annular means.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: the housing means includes a first housing supporting the first annular means and a second housing supporting the second annular means, means movably mounting the first housing and second housing for selected movement of the first housing and second housing toward and away from each other, whereby the first means and second means for guiding the wire are selectively positioned in a first position in engagement with the core and a second position spaced from the core, and control means for moving said first and second housings.
- 17. An apparatus for winding coils of wire on a core of an armature, said core having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire comprising: means for holding the armature, housing means located adjacent the armature when the armature is held by the means for holding the armature, first annular means rotatably mounted on the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core, second annular means rotatably mounted on the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core, said first and second annular means each having means for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire adjacent the core so that the wire can be wound on the core, drive means to rotate the first annular means and the second annular means whereby coils of wire are wound onto the core.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 including: first means for guiding the wire moving from the first annular means into a first pair of slots in the core to form a first coil on the wire, and second means to guide the wire moving from the second annular means into a second pair of slots in the core to form a second coil on the core.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein: the first means is mounted on the first annular means with bearing means whereby the first annular means can rotate relative to the first means, and the second means is mounted on the second annular means with bearing means whereby the second annular means can rotate relative to the second means.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein: the first means and the second means each have a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 18 including: means for moving the first means and the second means in operative relation with opposite portions of the core.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein: the first means and second means each have a first pocket to accommodate portions of the core and a surface for guiding wire into pairs of slots in the core.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 18 including: movable tabs on the first means and second means for guiding the wire over the ends of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to positions whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein: the first annular means and the second annular means each comprises a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein: each said circular sleeve has a diameter larger than the first means for guiding the wire.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 18 including: means for moving the first means and the second means in operative relation with opposite portions of the core.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein: the drive means includes driven gear means on said first annular means and said second annular means and drive gear means engageable with each of the driven gear means.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein: said driven gear means are bevel gears, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to said first annular means, a second pulley connected to said second annular means and means driveably connecting the first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein: said first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperates with the teeth of said first pulley and second pulley.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein: said first pulley is part of said first annular means and said second pulley is part of the second annular means.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein: the housing means includes a first housing supporting the first annular means and a second housing supporting the second annular means, means movably mounting the first housing and second housing for selected movement of the first housing and second housing toward and away from each other, whereby the first means and second means for guiding the wire are selectively positioned in a first position in engagement with the core and a second position spaced from the core, and control means for moving said first and second housings.
- 34. An apparatus for winding coils of wire on a core of an armature, said core having slots for accommodating wire comprising: means for holding the armature, a housing, annular means rotatably mounted on the housing, said annular means having means for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire outwardly of the core, drive means to rotate the annular means, said annular means comprising a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire, and means to guide the wire moving from the rotating circular sleeve into a pair of slots in the core to form a coil on the core.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: said means for holding the armature includes a collet for releasably holding the armature.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: the means to guide the wire is mounted on the sleeve with bearing means whereby the sleeve can rotate relative to the means to guide the wire.
- 38. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: the annular means comprises a plurality of circular sleeves, each circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire and locating the wire outwardly of a core, said drive means operable to rotate the circular sleeves.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: the means to guide the wire has concave recesses for accommodating separate segments of the core.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 34 including: means for moving the means to guide the wire in operative relation with the core.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: the means to guide the wire has a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 42. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said annular means and drive gear means engageable with the driven gear means.
- 43. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein: said driven gear means is a bevel gear, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear.
- 44. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, and a belt and pulley power transmitting means driveably connecting the motor with the annular means.
- 45. The apparatus of claim 34 including: movable tabs on the means to guide the wire for directing the wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to position whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 46. An apparatus for winding coils of wire on an object comprising: means for holding the object, housing structure, first annular means rotatably mounted on the housing structure, second annular means rotatably mounted on the housing structure, said first and second annular means each having means for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire adjacent the object, drive means to rotate the first annular means and the second annular means, first means for guiding the wire moving from the first annular means into first portions of the object form a first coil on the wire on the object, and second means to guide the wire moving from the second annular means into a second part of the object to form a second coil of wire on the object.
- 47. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein: the first annular means and the second annular means each comprising a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 48. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein: the first means and the second means each have a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 49. The apparatus of claim 46 including: means for moving the first means and the second means relative to each other whereby said first means and second means can be located in operative relation with opposite portions of the object.
- 50. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein: the first means and second means each have a first pocket to accommodate portions of the object and a surface for guiding wire onto the object.
- 51. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein: the drive means includes driven gear means on the first annular means and the second annular means and a drive gear means engageable with each of the driven gear means.
- 52. The apparatus of claim 51 wherein: the driven gear means are bevel gears, and the drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 53. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein: the drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to the first annular means, a second pulley connected to the second annular means and belt means driveably connecting the first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 54. The apparatus of claim 53 wherein: the first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperates with the teeth of the first pulley and second pulley means.
- 55. In an apparatus for winding coils of wire on a core of an armature having means for holding the core during the winding procedure the improvement of: an annular ring-like member, means for rotatably supporting the member, said member having means for receiving wire from a wire supply and discharging wire adjacent the core whereby rotation of the member will wind wire onto the core, said member having an opening providing access to the core whereby wire handling structure can be used to handle the wire during the winding procedure, and drive means for rotating the member.
- 56. The apparatus of claim 55 including: wire guiding means mounted on the member for directing wire into the slots of the core.
- 57. The apparatus of claim 56 including: means for moving the wire guiding means into engagement with the core.
- 58. The apparatus of claim 55 wherein: the drive means includes a driven gear connected to the member, drive gear engageable with the driven gear, and a motor to rotate the drive gear.
- 59. The apparatus of claim 55 wherein: the drive means includes a pulley connected to the member, a motor, and an endless belt driveably connecting the motor to the pulley.
- 60. An apparatus for winding coils of wire onto a core of an armature, said armature core having a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire, said apparatus comprising,
- means adapted for holding an armature in a predetermined orientation, said means including opposed portions adapted to center an armature therebetween,
- housing means including first and second portions thereof located adjacent opposite sides of said holding means,
- first ring-like annular means mounted on said housing means first portion for rotation about an axis and in rotatable circumambient relation to one of said holding means opposed portions,
- second ring-like annular means mounted on said housing means second portion for rotation about said axis and in rotatable circumambient relation to the other of said holding means opposed portions,
- said first and second annular means each having passage means extending therethrough for receiving wire from a supply thereof,
- drive means to rotate said first and second annular means in respectively opposite circumferential directions,
- first means for guiding the wire moving through said first annular means toward said holding means, and
- second means for guiding the wire moving through said second annular means toward said holding means,
- whereby as said first and second annular means rotate in opposite directions in circumambient relation to said holding means opposed portions, wire fed through the passage means may be wound into the slots of an armature core held by said holding means.
- 61. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said first annular means and said second annular means each comprises a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 62. The apparatus of claim 61 wherein: said circular sleeve has a diameter larger than said first means and second means for guiding the wire.
- 63. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said first housing portion means is mounted on said first annular means with bearing means whereby said first annular means can rotate relative to said first housing portion means, and said second housing portion means is mounted on said second annular means with bearing means whereby said second annular means can rotate relative to said second housing portion means.
- 64. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said holding means opposed portions include hubs having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 65. The apparatus of claim 64 wherein: said hubs each have a central pocket adapted to conform to a core, and,
- said first and second wire guiding means comprise tapered surfaces on said hubs.
- 66. The apparatus of claim 64 including: movable tabs on said hubs for guiding wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving said tabs to positions whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 67. The apparatus of claim 60 including: means for moving said holding means opposed portions and said housing means relative to each other.
- 68. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said first annular means and the second annular means and a drive gear means engageable with each of said driven gear means.
- 69. The apparatus of claim 68 wherein: said driven gear means are bevel gears, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 70. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means operably connected to said first and second annular means, drive gear means engageable with said driven gear means, and motor means for rotating said drive gear means.
- 71. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to said first annular means, a second pulley connected to said second annular means and an endless belt means drivably connecting said first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 72. The apparatus of claim 71 wherein: said first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperate with the teeth of said first pulley and second pulley.
- 73. The apparatus of claim 71 wherein: said first pulley is part of said first annular means and said second pulley is part of said second annular means.
- 74. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 75. The apparatus of claim 60 wherein: said holding means opposed portions respectively support said first and second annular means,
- means movably mounting said opposed portions for selected movement of said portions toward and away from each other, and
- control means for moving said holding means opposed portions.
- 76. An apparatus for winding coils of wire upon the core of an armature, said core having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire, said apparatus comprising:
- means adapted for holding an armature, said means including opposed portions adapted to receive an armature therebetween,
- housing means located adjacent said holding means,
- first ring-like annular means rotatably mounted on said housing means in circumambient relation to one of said holding means opposed portions,
- second ring-like annular means rotatably mounted on said housing means in circumambient relation to the other of said holding means opposed portions,
- said first and second annular means each having aperture means therethrough for receiving wire from a supply thereof, and
- drive means to rotate said first and second annular means, whereby as said first and second annular means are rotated in circumambient relation to said holding means opposed portions, wire fed through the aperture means may be wound into the slots of an armature core held by said holding means.
- 77. The apparatus of claim 76 including: first means associated with said holding means opposed portions for guiding the wire from said first annular means and second means associated with said holding means opposed portions for guiding the wire from said second annular means.
- 78. The apparatus of claim 77 including: bearing means between said first annular means and one of said holding means opposed portions and between said second annular means and the other of said holding means opposed portions.
- 79. The apparatus of claim 77 wherein: said first and second holding means opposed portions each have a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 80. The apparatus of claim 79 including: movable tabs on hub means for guiding the wire over the ends of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to positions whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 81. The apparatus of claim 77 including: means for moving said holding means opposed portions with respect to each other.
- 82. The apparatus of claim 77 wherein: said holding means opposed portions include pockets therein configured to conform to a core, and
- said first and second guiding means comprise inclined surfaces adjacent said pockets.
- 83. The apparatus of claim 76 wherein: the first annular means and the second annular means each comprises a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 84. The apparatus of claim 83 wherein: each said circular sleeve has a diameter larger than the holding means opposed portions.
- 85. The apparatus of claim 76 wherein: the drive means includes driven gears means on said first annular means and said second annular means and drive gear means engageable with each of the driven gear means.
- 86. The apparatus of claim 85 wherein: said driven gear means are bevel gears, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 87. The apparatus of claim 85 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to said first annular means, a second pulley connected to said second annular means and means drivably connecting the first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 88. The apparatus of claim 87 wherein: said first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperate with said teeth of the first pulley and second pulley.
- 89. The apparatus of claim 87 wherein: said first pulley is part of said first annular means and said second pulley is part of said second annular means.
- 90. The apparatus of claim 76 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 91. The apparatus of claim 76 wherein: said holding means opposed portions respectively support said first and second annular means,
- means movably mounting said portions for selected movement of said portions toward and away from each other, and
- control means for moving said holding means portions.
- 92. An apparatus for winding coils of wire onto a core of an armature, said core having a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire, said apparatus comprising,
- means adapted for holding an armature in a predetermined orientation, said means including a surface portion for guiding wire thereover and toward an armature that may be held by said holding means,
- a housing disposed adjacent said holding means,
- ring-like annular means rotatably mounted within said housing,
- said annular means having a passage extending through the ring-like portion thereof for receiving wire from a supply thereof,
- said annular means having a diameter greater than said wire guiding surface portions of said holding means and being disposed in circumambient relation thereto,
- drive means for rotating said ring-like annular means,
- whereby as said annular means is driven in surrounding circumambient relation to said wire guiding surface portion, wire fed through the passage in the ring-like means may be guided over said surface portion and into the slots of an armature core.
- 93. The apparatus of claim 92 wherein: said means for holding the armature includes a collet for releasably holding the armature.
- 94. The apparatus of claim 92 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 95. The apparatus of claim 92 wherein: said surface portion to guide the wire has a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 96. The apparatus of claim 92 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said annular means and drive gear means engageable with the driven gear means.
- 97. The apparatus of claim 96 wherein: said driven gear means is a bevel gear, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear.
- 98. The apparatus of claim 92 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, and a belt and pulley power transmitting means drivably connecting the motor with the annular means.
- 99. The apparatus of claim 92 including: movable tabs on said surface portion for guiding the wire for directing the wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to position whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 100. In combination: a core of an armature having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of slots for accommodating coils of wire and an apparatus for winding coils of wire on said core of the armature comprising,
- means for holding the core in a predetermined position,
- housing means having a first portion located on one side of the core and a second portion located on the opposite side of the core,
- first annular means rotatably mounted on the first portion of the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core,
- second annular means rotatably mounted on the second portion of the housing means about an axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the core,
- said first and second annular means each having means for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire adjacent the core so that the wire can be wound in the slots of the core,
- drive means to rotate the first annular means in a first circumferential direction and to rotate the second annular means in an opposite circumferential direction,
- first means for guiding the wire moving from the first annular means into a first pair of slots of the core to form a first coil on the core, and
- second means to guide the wire moving from the second annular means into a second pair of slots in the core to form a second coil on the core.
- 101. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: said first annular means and said second annular means each comprises a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire.
- 102. The apparatus of claim 101 wherein: the circular sleeve has a diameter larger than said first means and second means for guiding the wire.
- 103. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: the first means is mounted on the first annular means with bearing means whereby the first annular means can rotate relative to the first means, and the second means is mounted on the second annular means with bearing means whereby the second annular means can rotate relative to the second means.
- 104. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: the first means and the second means each have a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 105. The apparatus of claim 100 including: means for moving the first means and the second means relative to each other whereby said first means and second means can be located in operative relation with opposite portions of the core.
- 106. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: the first means and second means each have a first pocket to accommodate portions of the core and a surface for guiding wire into pairs of slots in the core.
- 107. The apparatus of claim 100 including: movable tabs on the first means and second means for guiding wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to positions whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 108. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said first annular means and the second annular means and a drive gear means engageable with each of said driven gear means.
- 109. The apparatus of claim 108 wherein: said driven gear means are bevel gears, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear in driving engagement with the bevel gears.
- 110. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means operably connected to said first and second annular means, drive gear means engageable with said driven gear means, and motor means for rotating said drive gear means.
- 111. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, a first pulley connected to said first annular means, a second pulley connected to said second annular means and an endless belt means drivably connecting said first pulley and second pulley with the motor.
- 112. The apparatus of claim 111 wherein: said first pulley and second pulley have teeth and said belt means have teeth which cooperates with the teeth of said first pulley and second pulley.
- 113. The apparatus of claim 111 wherein: said first pulley is part of said first annular means and said second pulley is part of said second annular means.
- 114. The apparatus of claim 100 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 115. In combination: a core of an armature having a longitudinal axis and slots for accommodating wire and an apparatus for winding coils of wire on said core comprising,
- means for holding the core to locate the core in a predetermined position,
- a housing located adjacent one side of the core,
- annular means rotatably mounted on the housing for rotation about an axis normal to the longitudinal axis of the core,
- said annular means comprising a circular sleeve having a hole for receiving wire from a supply of wire and locating the wire outwardly of the core,
- drive means to rotate the circular sleeve,
- and means to guide the wire moving from the rotating circular sleeve into a pair of slots in the core to form a coil of wire on the core.
- 116. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: said means for holding the armature includes a collet for releasably holding the armature.
- 117. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: said means for holding the armature is connected to means for sequentially indexing the armature about its longitudinal axis.
- 118. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: the means to guide the wire is mounted on the sleeve with bearing means whereby the sleeve can rotate relative to the means to guide the wire.
- 119. The apparatus of claim 115 including: movable tabs on the means to guide the wire for directing the wire into the slots of the core, and actuator means for moving the tabs to position whereby the armature can be removed from the apparatus.
- 120. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: the means to guide the wire has concave recesses for accommodating separate segments of the core.
- 121. The apparatus of claim 115 including: means for moving the means to guide the wire in operative relation with the core.
- 122. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: the means to guide the wire has a hub having an open recess for accommodating instrumentalities used to handle parts of the wire.
- 123. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: said drive means includes driven gear means on said annular means and drive gear means engageable with the driven gear means.
- 124. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: said driven gear means is a bevel gear, and said drive gear means is a pinion gear.
- 125. The apparatus of claim 115 wherein: said drive means includes a motor, and a belt and pulley power transmitting means drivably connecting the motor with the annular means.
