Claims
- 1. Apparatus for folding wire mesh fed in the form of an elongated sheet composed of simple twist rows of the type in which each row of mesh is of zig-zag configuration with alternate generally V-shaped equally spaced peaks and valleys, the peaks of one row are looped through the valleys of an adjacent row to connect the rows together, and adjacent rows of mesh can be folded back alternately toward each other in accordian fashion around lines of articulation formed by the looped-together peaks and valleys of adjacent rows, said apparatus comprising, at least two supports each having an upwardly facing surface for receiving said mesh, said surfaces of said support being elongated in the direction of feed of the mesh sheet, and in spaced-apart vertical planes in the path of and parallel to the direction of feed of the mesh sheet, said surfaces of said supports being spaced from each other by a distance substantially equal to a multiple of the distance between the peaks of the rows of mesh, to enable said upwardly facing surfaces of the supports to engage and support the mesh at the underside of peaks and valleys to permit the mesh to fold by gravity about said lines of articulation.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said surfaces of said first and second supports each form an angle of approximately 40.degree. with respect to horizontal.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein each support comprises a beam, and said surface of the support comprises an elongated upwardly facing edge of the beam.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said apparatus is downstream of a machine for making the mesh sheet and having a discharge roller, said apparatus further comprising curved bars secured to upstream ends of the beams and extending at least partially around said discharge roller, said curved bars being in generally parallel vertical planes spaced apart the same distance as said beams to guide the mesh onto the beams.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said supports each comprise a flexible strand.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said strand of each support comprises a length of chain driven at a longitudinal speed lower than the speeds at which the mesh sheet is fed.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising, means downstream of said supports for winding said accordian folded mesh to form a roll.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said means for winding said mesh comprises strands, upstream portions of said strands providing said supports for folding said mesh sheet.
