Claims
- 1. A system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein said computer includes programming defining an operating system having a set of commands and programming to enable a remote system to have remote access to commands of said operating system over said radio.
- 2. A message display system as in claim 1:wherein there are a plurality of mobile systems, each including one of said automotive vehicles carrying at least said display, said computer, and said radio; and further including a central system including:
one or more computer systems; one or more radios connected to said central system computers to enable them to wirelessly communicate with the computers on said mobile systems through the radios on those mobile systems; and wherein the computers of said central system include programming for:
causing the central system to communicate data to said mobile systems controlling what messages are displayed on said mobile systems; and enabling the computers of the central system to obtain remote access of one or more computers on said mobile systems.
- 3. A system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a radio connected to said computer for conveying to and from the computer digital information, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display, and for transmitting to remote computers information supplied to the radio by the vehicle's computer; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system information about the status of said computer.
- 4. A message display system as in claim 3:
wherein there are a plurality of mobile systems, each including one of said automotive vehicles carrying at least said display, said computer, and said radio; and further including a central system including:
one or more computer systems; one or more radios connected to said central system computers so as to enable them to wirelessly communicate with the computers on said mobile systems through the radios on those mobile systems; wherein the computers of said central system include programming for:
causing the central system to communicate data to said mobile systems controlling what messages are displayed on said mobile systems; and enabling the computers of the central system to request said information about the status of the computer of a mobile system.
- 5. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein said programming in a mobile unit's computer causes said computer to initiate a communication over said radio about the computer's status in response to the detection by the computer one or more conditions in its status.
- 6. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer's video interface includes screen memory used to drive said display, and said information about the status of the computer includes information about the data stored in said screen memory.
- 7. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer includes a mass storage device; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about how full the mass storage device is.
- 8. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer includes random access memory; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about how much random access memory is in the machine.
- 9. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer includes random access memory; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about how much random access memory in the machine is free.
- 10. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer includes one or more central processing units; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about how busy the one or more central processing units have been.
- 11. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein said information about the status of the computer includes information about how much traffic there has been over said radio.
- 12. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer include one or more memory devices for storing display messages which can be displayed by said computer on said display; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about what display messages are stored on said memory devices.
- 13. A message display system as in claim 3 wherein:
said computer includes a network interface which uses the IP protocol to send and receive data packets over said radio; and said information about the status of the computer includes information about the IP address of said network interface.
- 14. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system real time information about the status of said mobile display unit.
- 15. A mobile display system as in claim 14 wherein:
said computer system contains programming to select which of a plurality of messages are shown on said display at a given time: said real-time information indicates which message is currently being shown on said display.
- 16. A mobile display system as in claim 14 wherein said real-time information indicates the current speed of said vehicle.
- 17. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; one or more enclosures enclosing said display, computer, and radio; a sensor for providing a measurement of the temperature inside one of said enclosures; a connection for communicating said temperature measurement to said computer; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system information about said temperature measurement.
- 18. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a light sensor for providing a measurement of the amount of light falling on said display from sources other than the display itself; a connection for communicating said measurement to said computer; a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system information about said light measurement.
- 19. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle and; the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a connection for communicating to said computer an indication of the amount of light being emitted by said display; a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system information about said amount of light being emitted.
- 20. A mobile display system as in claim 19 wherein:
said display is a backlit display having a light filter and backlight to provide illumination for the light filter; and said information about the amount of light being emitted includes information about the amount of power being supplied to said backlight.
- 21. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle having and ignition system and means for turning the ignition system on and off; and the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a connection for communicating to said computer an indication of whether said ignition system is on or off; a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system an indication of whether said ignition system is on or off.
- 22. A mobile display system for publicly displaying messages comprising:
an automotive vehicle; and the following elements carried by the vehicle:
a publicly visible electronic display; a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to and from the computer, including information about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; wherein:
said radio includes electronics for generating an indication of the strength of the radio frequency signal which is being received by that radio; said computer receives said signal strength indication; and said computer is provided with programming enabling it to communicate over said radio to a remote computer system information about the signal strength indication.
