Claims
- 1. A method for increasing the molecular weight of aromtic polysulphone comprises heating a thermoplastic aromatic polysulphone having reduced viscosity of at least 0.3 (as measured at 25.degree. C on a solution in dimethyl formamide containing 1 g of polymer in 100 cm.sup.3 of solution) and containing at least 0.2 aromatically bound hydroxyl groups per 100 polymer repeat units at a temperature of 330.degree. C to 450.degree. C in the presence of oxygen.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 in which the oxygen is atmospheric oxygen.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 in which the heating temperature is 350.degree. C to 450.degree. C.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 in which the polysulphone is heated for 10 to 60 minutes.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 in which the aromatic polysulphone is mixed before heating with a fluorocarbon polymer, the mixture comprising 10% to 90% of polysulphone and 90% to 10% of fluorocarbon polymer.
- 6. A method according to claim 5 in which the fluorocarbon polymer is a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) lubricant powder and the heating is carried out at temperatures of 350.degree. C to 400.degree. C.
- 7. The product obtained by the process of claim 1.
