Claims
- 1. An aromatic, thermoplastic phosphonatocarbonate of the formula ##STR19## wherein E is ##STR20## Ar is aryl having from 6 to 14 carbon atoms or said aryl substituted by at least one member selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, fluorine, chlorine and bromine ##STR21## R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkenyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.30 -aryl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.30 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.30 -cycloalkenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.30 -aralkyl, C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 -aralkenyl or said aryl or said aralkyl or aralkenyl substituted by at least one member selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, fluorine, chlorine and bromine;
- X is the deshydroxy radical of an aromatic dihydroxy compound having 6 to 30 carbon atoms, and
- n is the average degree of polymerization which corresponds to a number-average molecular weight when measured by membrane osmometry in dioxane as the solvent of at least 11,000.
- 2. The phosphonatocarbonate of claim 1 wherein X is selected from the group consisting of ##STR22## wherein Z is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, fluorine, chlorine or bromine,
- a is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4,
- b is 0 or an integer from 1 to 3 and
- A is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkylene, C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 -alkylidene, C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkylene, C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkylidene, --SO.sub.2 --, --CO--, --O-- or --S--.
- 3. An aromatic, thermoplastic polyphosphonatocarbonate produced by the process which comprises polycondensing (a) at least one aromatic dihydroxy compound having 6 to 30 carbon atoms with (b) a diaryl carbonate having 6 to 14 carbon atoms in each aryl moiety and (c) a phosphonic acid diaryl ester having 6 to 14 carbon atoms in each aryl moiety in the presence of a catalytic amount of a basic polycondensation catalyst at a temperature of from 80.degree. to 340.degree. C. and under a pressure of from 600 to 0.1 mm Hg in an inert gaseous atmosphere, the molar ratio of (b) to (c) being from 5:95 to 95:5 and the molar ratio of (a) to the sum of (b) and (c) being from 0.91 to 0.99:1, and following polycondensation, neutralizing said basic catalyst.
- 4. An aromatic, thermoplastic, branched polyphosphonatocarbonate according to claim 3 wherein said process includes as a polycondensation component 0.05 to 3.0 mole percent, relative to dihydroxy compound, of a branching agent having at least three phenolic moieties.
- 5. An aromatic, thermoplastic, branched polyphosphonatocarbonate according to claim 3 wherein said process includes as a polycondensation component 0.05 to 3.0 mole percent, relative to the sum of components (b) and (c), of a triaryl phosphate branching agent.
