Claims
- 1. In an arrangement for producing ingots of unalloyed and alloyed steels having an improved primary crystallization, reduced ingot segregation and a reduced content of non-metallic inclusions, which arrangement includes an ingot mould having a rim and a cavity adapted to be filled with molten steel covered with a slag mixture, energy means for supplying heat to the slag mixture, and a thermally conductive top part placed on said mould, the improvement comprising an annular projection provided on said top part and adapted to extend below the level of molten steel in said mould, said projection having a conical profile forming a conical face adapted to cool and solidify a skin of the molten steel in contact with it over a region inward from the rim, said conical face having an inclination relative to the vertical, wherein tan .alpha. amounts to at least d.sub.m /2h, d.sub.m being the minimum upper inner diameter of said mould and h being the height of the mould cavity, said projection also adapted to cool and solidify a slag sealing plug adjacent said molten steel level shortly after solidifying said skin.
- 2. An arrangement for producing ingots of unalloyed and alloyed steels having an improved primary crystallization, reduced ingot segregation and a reduced content of non-metallic inclusions, which arrangement includes an ingot mould having a rim and a cavity adapted to be filled with molten steel covered with a slag mixture, energy means for supplying heat to the slag mixture, and a thermally conductive top part secured to said mould, the improvement comprising
- an annular projection provided on said top part adapted to extend below the level of molten steel in said mould, said projection being adapted to cool the molten steel in contact with it over a region inward from the rim; and
- detachable connecting means provided for securing said top part to the rim of the mould, said connecting means including means for lowering said projection into the mould and means for detachable the top part from the mould upon the formation of an ingot skin during solidification.
- 3. An arrangement as set forth in claim 2, wherein said connecting means are designed as crank devices.
- 4. An arrangement as set forth in claim 2, wherein said top part is formed of a metal construction having an inner side, part of said inner side being lined with a refractory material.
- 5. An arrangement as set forth in claim 2, further comprising anchoring elements secured to the top part and having ends adapted to extend below the level of the molten steel in said mould, said top part being adapted to be carried by the ingot skin via said anchoring elements upon disengagement of the connecting means.
- 6. An arrangement as set forth in claim 5, wherein said anchoring elements are drawing anchors.
- 7. An arrangement as set forth in claims 5 or 6 wherein the ends of the anchoring elements that are adapted to extend to below the level of the molten steel in said mould are hammer-head shaped.
